About Emily
Outside of my studies, I'm someone who thrives on staying active and curious. I have a real passion for writing and journalism. I love the craft of putting ideas into words, telling a story well, and finding exactly the right way to express something, and it's a big part of why I enjoy teaching English so much. I'm drawn to writers and thinkers who value clarity and strong ideas: George Orwell's essays on writing plainly and honestly, Geoffrey Blainey's accessible take on history, and Australian voices like Tim Winton who capture place and character so vividly. Influences like these shape how I approach reading and writing with my students, paying attention to how something is written, not just what it says. I also play hockey competitively for Valley Hockey Club, with representative experience at state level, and compete in track and field, so I know firsthand the patience and discipline it takes to improve at something, whether that's shaving time off a sprint or finally nailing a piece of writing. I bring that same mindset into my tutoring: every student grows at their own pace, and small, consistent wins add up. My goal is always to make learning feel encouraging, achievable, and even a little fun.

Hi, I'm Emily Barros! I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Information Technology, majoring in Enterprise Computing and Artificial Intelligence. I graduated from St Philomena's School in 2024 with an ATAR of 91, and achieved full marks in my external English paper. Alongside my academic background, I've developed strong communication and public speaking skills through debating and other extracurricular activities, which I love bringing into my lessons to help students feel confident expressing their ideas. I tutor students from Prep through to Grade 10, and I'm a highly adaptable teacher. I move at whatever pace best suits the student in front of me, whether that means slowing down to build solid foundations or pushing ahead when they're ready. My lessons run anywhere from one to two hours, tailored to each student's needs and attention span. I'd love to help students grow not just in their results, but in their confidence and love of learning.
