As teachers, we are often so focused on what we want students to understand that we often forget what misunderstandings can look like. I prepare for misconceptions in my lesson plans, so to better be prepared to avoid and resolve them. To begin, I go through my lesson objectives and the content. What could be misunderstood? How might it be misunderstood? How can I try to avoid those misunderstandings? How can I resolve them if they do arise? Regularly check for understanding throughout a lesson, and utilize my misconception plans. By better anticipating a lesson’s confusion points, I can better ensure student learning.
