About Youssef
My name is Youssef Khiari, and I am a guitarist, bassist, composer, and producer based in New York City.
My musical journey began during my teenage years with rock music before expanding into blues and funk. In 2015, discovering jazz opened up entirely new horizons for me, particularly through my encounter with master musician Fawzi Chekili, with whom I had the honor of studying and performing. I soon became active in the Tunisian jazz scene, participating in major events such as International Jazz Day 2017.
Seeking new experiences and opportunities for growth, I continued my studies at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, where I immersed myself in an intensive musical environment—attending classes during the day and spending nights at jam sessions and performances. During this period, I performed in clubs throughout San Francisco and recorded an EP while touring with C. Marcus Scott & The Funky Spliff in 2018.
Since moving to New York in 2020, I have continued to develop my career as a musician and composer. I released my debut album, Times & Aphorisms, in 2021, followed by two live albums in 2023: Yuzarseef & Interstellar Crusaders: Live at Nublu 1 and Live at Nublu 2. Along the way, I have collaborated with renowned artists including Thomas Pridgen, Jermaine Holmes, Corey Fonville, and Nate Smith. I am also involved in a wide range of projects spanning jazz, hip-hop, and world music, including collaborations with singer and guembri player Nour Harkati.
I teach because music has always been a guiding force in my life, and I am passionate about sharing that experience with other musicians. My teaching approach focuses on exploring different musical styles, developing harmony and rhythm, and, above all, helping students cultivate their own unique musical identity. Beyond technique, I believe music is ultimately a powerful form of personal expression.
