About Eliana

I love teaching, because it allows me to impart my knowledge and see my students progress and achieve great things makes me incredibly happy. I am an opera singer, but also a mother and I am now mainly teaching, as I want to be there for my children. Teaching means so much, at a time when missing my industry. It gives me a strong sense of purpose.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I first developed a passion for music while listening to old romances sung by famous Romanian singers during the Communist era and I began to sing them while knitting, in front of my grandmother's house, so that more people from the street could hear me. I then started organising neighbourhood concerts and loved singing everything I learned from TV music shows.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I could listen to Maria Callas singing opera arias all day. Also, I love the Brahms and Beethoven Symphonies and piano concertos.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I would give a course on what it takes to be a good human being and maybe also in the importance of faith and not building a life and a musical career on self-centered principles. If we only do music for our own interests, without giving back and living to serve others with our talent, the highest classical training is ultimately futile.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

The human voice is by far the hardest instrument to master. Good singing involves the whole of the human being, the imagination, mental resilience, capacity to be vulnerable and allow deep feelings to contribute towards technical progress. Singing takes years to master. The breathing mechanism is extremely complex. You also need to know Italian to sing opera and, ideally, French and German as well. Your voice is affected by illness often or tiredness and you need to build a soung technic foundation to cope with these aspects. You personal life also has a huge impact on your vocal health. Good classical singing is very complex indeed.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Consistency. Daily work, without finding excuses not to do it. Then vision and service. Have a clear vision of where you need to be and serving others with your talent.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

J.S. Bach, because his music seems infused with God, spirituality.

Maria Callas. She has been my idol. She revolutionised opera with her theatrical skills, amongst other gifts.

Taylor Swift. I would like to understand how she conposes and what inspires her.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

When I started my studies at the Royal College of Music, my English was not very good. My voice teacher kept saying that "at the end of the day", of I follow her instructions, my technique will get better. My lessons took place in the morning. I took her words literally and thought that, if my lesson was later in the day, towards "the end of the day", my voice will be more warmed up and I will find improving my technique easier. I then made an official request for my lessons' time to be changed to the end of the day. My teacher found this hilarious.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

    1. Experience. I am lucky to have sang at the highest leven and to teach for many years as well.

    2. Musical training. Having trained at the Royal College of Music, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world, equipped me with knowledge about style, technique, performance and how to cater for different types of voices.

    3. Patience. I am a patient and nurturing teacher, loving my job and having the patience to teach in detail, and with a clear plan ahead.
