In my 15 years of teaching in Japan I have realized that when it comes to learning any language, empowering the student to express themselves with their primary mode is vital. Voiced expression is the most common but in modern times there has been an increase in written expression.
With my tutored students I will use the first lesson to assess the students needs and goals so that I can present a framework for that student for the next class.
I am not a native speaker of Japanese which means that I understand the difficulties of learning first hand. I have had English instruction for very technical linguistic concepts and my years of translating work allows me to simplify those technical details for new learners.
