About Kathy

Hello my name is Kathy and I am trained in primary teaching from prep to grade 6.

I am working for a labour hire agency currently, in both mainstream and special Ed settings. I am assisting the teachers in the classroom to help students to learn and achieve the achievement standards in the ACARA curriculum. I love helping children who may be disadvantaged in some way to be able to have a better future for themselves. Whether they are not up to the level of their peers, or have a learning disability, I have a keen interest to help students by assisting them to develop new skills in literacy and numeracy.

About the lesson

When I teach English to children under grade 4 I like to teach them phonics so that children can sound out words and decode words that may be difficult to read. Understanding the relationship between letters and their sounds is an important step in learning how to read.

I plan to help children to be good readers in helping them to make meaning out of the words that they read, by finding the main idea, in the text, discovering important details, finding the sequence of the story, and comparing and contrasting story events or characters. I also consider grammar and spelling to be very important in teaching English to children.
I often base the aims of my lessons on the content descriptions in the ACARA (Australian Curriculum).

I usually have an introduction in my lesson plans, just focussing on the subject content and emphasizing on some parts of the lesson that would be appealing to the student. In my lessons I try to use materials that are visual and that may appeal to the chn with sound affects or interesting music. I also use tactile materials that children can take apart and put back together again. I usually set homework and give chn a small tangible reward for doing their homework.
