About Betty
Performing at small venues across the American South and Southwest for 13 years taught me how to handle an audience. I spent my early career playing acoustic sets in dive bars where you have to command the room with just a wooden instrument and your voice.
Open-mic regulars eventually started asking how I built my style, which led me into the world of teaching. My BFA from USC Thornton provides the technical foundation I pair with that real-world stage time.
I focus on the Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt tradition of storytelling through music. Working with kids and self-taught players gives me a chance to break down complex concepts into usable chunks. Performance-focused students often find my honest approach refreshing because we skip the fluff. I keep things grounded by relying on the grit of the Americana scene to guide our progress.
