About Derek
I have 9 years of experience teaching guitar and hold a PhD in Contemporary Guitar Education. Throughout my career, I have helped students strengthen technique, improve musical understanding, and gain confidence in their playing. Watching learners transform their abilities through dedication and practice remains highly rewarding.
My teaching philosophy centers on adaptability, encouragement, and meaningful progress. I believe every student deserves lessons that recognize their unique strengths while helping them develop new skills. Confidence and consistency are important elements of my approach.
Outside the classroom, I enjoy composing original music, studying guitar arrangements, and exploring different performance styles. These interests continue to influence my teaching in positive ways. I am passionate about helping students reach their musical goals while enjoying every step of the learning journey.

My guitar lessons are designed to help students develop practical skills that support both creativity and technical improvement. We focus on rhythm precision, chord fluency, fretboard navigation, fingerstyle development, picking techniques, and musical expression. Every lesson combines structured learning with opportunities for exploration.
Students engage in technique studies, song analysis, ear-training exercises, improvisation activities, and performance preparation. I help learners understand the reasoning behind each skill so they can apply knowledge with confidence. Lessons are customized to suit individual goals and musical interests.
I enjoy helping students become independent musicians who feel comfortable exploring new challenges. Through constructive feedback and supportive guidance, learners build confidence while improving their technical ability. My goal is to create lessons that are productive, engaging, and enjoyable.
