About Gwyn

- What kind of experience do you have?

As a 'cellist I have worked as recitalist and as a freeleance orchestral player. As a pianist I have worked as an accompanist, mostly with singers. As a composer my works have been performed and broadcast around the world by performers such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra (who recently commissioned a piece), and by numerous soloists and chamber groups from many countries. I am a professor of composition at Trinity College of Music, London.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No, as I mostly work with adults. But if anyone were to be concerned I could easily obtain one.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama: 'cello with Joad Dickson, piano with Lawrence Glover and composition with Dr. Frank Spedding.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Sound and Music (SAM).

I am a musician working in both Stratford upon Avon and in London, mostly as a composer, but I continue to teach instruments as I find it fascinating and challenging. I hope to encourage a love of music-making, and a sense of personal achievement.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Cello, Piano, Composition and Theory. I also offer chamber music coaching, in which I have considerable experience.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

My principal qualification is my Professorship at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, but I also have two DRSAMD (Diploma of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama): Teachers and Performers. However, I regard my extensive teaching experience and the many successes of my students as my most valuable, if unofficial, qualification.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £55 per hour; a short initial consultation lesson is free. People in a difficult financial situation may benefit from a negotiable reduction in these fees.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from home in Stratford upon Avon and also in London, at Camberwell.

- When are you available?

I mostly teach in the evenings, but all times are possible, including weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

The majority of my students are adults or teenagers, but I consider accepting anyone from the age of 11. I occasionally teach younger children if they are unusually gifted, or there is some other special reason. My students ability levels range from the occasional beginner, many at an intermediate level, to a number of advanced, professional and semi-professional musicians.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

When appropriate I prepare students for the ABRSM graded exams and diplomas, and sometimes for Trinity College diplomas. However, I also have many students who prefer not to take exams, either because they simply want to play for their own pleasure or because they (and I) feel that exams will not be relevant to their progress.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

No matter what a student's age or level of ability or experience there is always a way forward, as long as certain basic technical principles are understood and observed, and the student practises with clarity and commitment. This applies equally to instrumentalists and composers.
