About Zhi Shan
I’m a saxophonist who genuinely enjoys helping others learn and grow through music. I started teaching because I remember how confusing and frustrating learning an instrument can feel without the right guidance. Having trained under many different prolific sax players from many different countries, I experienced firsthand how effective clear structure, discipline, and attention to detail can be — and I now bring that mindset into my own teaching.
I believe everyone can improve on the saxophone with the right approach. My goal is to make learning feel focused but supportive, where students understand why they are practising something, not just what they are playing. I take the time to break things down clearly, adapt to each student’s pace, and build confidence alongside technique.
I teach because I want my students to enjoy the process, see real progress, and feel proud of what they can do on the instrument. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refine your playing, I aim to create lessons that are structured, encouraging, and genuinely effective.

My approach to teaching saxophone is shaped by how I learned myself. I studied under Ian Chan, a renowned Taiwanese saxophone player whose background combines strong technical discipline with deep musical understanding. From that experience, I learned the value of a structured, detail-focused approach — often associated with traditional Asian music education — where fundamentals are taken seriously and nothing is rushed.
In my teaching, I focus on building a strong technical foundation first: tone production, control, posture, and consistency. Rather than jumping straight into difficult pieces, I make sure students truly understand and feel comfortable with the basics, because that’s what allows real progress later. At the same time, I adapt lessons to each student’s goals, whether they want to play classically, explore jazz, or simply enjoy the instrument with confidence.
This balance of discipline and flexibility helps students develop faster, avoid bad habits, and build skills that actually last. My aim isn’t just to teach songs, but to give students the tools to understand the instrument and become independent, confident musicians.
