I have over 25 years’ experience teaching piano and in that time only one of my pupils has ever failed an exam! That said, I have a flexible approach to teaching and am happy to teach ‘off piste’ also

About Gareth
I studied music and education to degree and postgraduate level, graduating from Bretton Hall with a PGCE in secondary music teaching, and I deliver singing in schools.
As a pianist I became an Associate of the London College of Music at the age of 17. I am in regular demand as a pianist/accordionist/keys player, performing professionally on a regular basis with the world-famous Barnsley Youth Choir and with the contemporary folk/dance outfits the Demon Barbers and Breaking Tradition, as well as theatre work in the South Yorkshire region. I am a keen singer-songwriter, my work having been recorded and published on both sides of the Atlantic.

I base my teaching largely around the ABRSM music syllabus but also venture into jazz and popular piano theory and techniques, vamping around chord sequences and improvising by ear as well as reading music in the traditional way. I start with technical warmups and also like to introduce new material near the beginning of the lesson when focus and energy are in ready supply, then reinforce material already learnt. I am adaptive to the student’s particular tastes and requirements: exams or free study, classical/pop/jazz according to taste. I also feed in theory and ear training and can take pupils through theory papers alongside their practical study.
In short, I have my ways but I have never taught two pupils in the same way in all my years of teaching. You can blaze your own trail with me!
NB I currently have lots of DAYTIME hours to fill, ie. 9-3 in particular, so adult learners are particularly welcome to contact me.

Gareth is a very kind and patient tutor. He has a wonderfully imaginative way of explaining things to make them easier to understand for younger learners.
He is a very competent musician whose passion for music comes across in every lesson he delivers, instilling confidence in his students very early on in their musical journey.
We are really pleased with our daughter's progress, and the care he has taken to encourage her along the way especially when new pieces are tricky to master, or if her confidence drops a bit.View more recommendations
