About Matthew

I have spent most of my time in Tokyo, but I also lived in Nagoya, when I first went to Japan. My parents and brother are now based in Cairns, and I have recently arrived to stay here for an indefinite period. As I have worked as a teacher in Japan for many years, and can understand and respond to Japanese people on an everyday level, I feel I have a wide vocabulary, based on my experiences during my lengthy time in Japan. I owned and operated retail stores, operated AirBnb apartments, and have spent time visiting schools and companies, selling my Children's Books, designed for Japanese kids learning English. I have also worked as a Japanese speaking tour guide in Australia. I feel my wide range of experiences in Japan, and with Japanese people allow me to teach useful everyday Japanese, that you will not always find in text books. Text books often contain formal Japanese - which in many ways, is not how average Japanese people speak on a daily basis.

About the lesson

I feel my lessons can be especially valuable for people either dealing with Japanese customers in Australia, or those who are planning to travel to Japan, and want to learn useful, daily phrases. I can make dialogs written in the roman alphabet (the same as English), which means you can learn more phrases, without having to also learn written Japanese - which is the most difficult part of the language. I feel that I can help very much with pronunciation, as Japanese people often mistake me for a native speaker, when speaking on the telephone. I feel that after just 2 or 3 lessons, I can prepare you well before you travel to Japan on vacation. I can also teach valuable cultural knowledge regarding what kind of behaviour is acceptable, or unacceptable.
