About Matthew

I am a full-time Head of Biology at a leading selective London independent school, where I have taught for the past nine years. I hold a PhD in Molecular Biology, am a published scientist and have experience as an A-level examiner.

I have approximately ten years’ teaching experience, with extensive experience of teaching A-level Biology and supporting students towards the highest grades. Before entering teaching, I worked in scientific research, and I bring both this academic background and my current classroom experience to my tuition.

Having tutored successfully in the past, I am now returning to private tuition on a deliberately limited basis. I am looking to work with a very small number of AQA A-level Biology students alongside my full-time teaching commitments. I particularly value developing an ongoing relationship with students, getting to know their individual strengths and weaknesses and providing highly focused support over time.

My usual availability is Thursday evenings and alternate Saturdays. Online tuition is available, with very limited in-person tuition around Caterham on Saturdays. As I am a full-time teacher and Head of Department, tuition is arranged around my professional commitments, and occasional school responsibilities may mean that a usual session is unavailable. Additional tuition during school holidays may sometimes be possible by prior discussion.

About the lesson

My tuition is highly individual and focused specifically on AQA A-level Biology. I work with each student to identify the areas limiting their performance, whether there are gaps in understanding, application of knowledge, data analysis, mathematical skills or examination technique.

As an experienced A-level teacher and examiner, I place particular emphasis on helping students understand what questions are really asking and how to produce precise, high scoring answers. We will use challenging application questions, unfamiliar contexts, experimental data and past exam material alongside targeted teaching.

I normally teach in 2-hour sessions. This gives us time to explore difficult concepts properly and then apply them through substantial examination work, rather than rushing through material.

I particularly enjoy working with ambitious students targeting A/A*, as well as capable students who are currently underperforming and want to move to the next grade.

My aim is to develop an ongoing relationship with a small number of students, so that tuition becomes increasingly targeted as I get to know their strengths, weaknesses and individual approach to Biology.
