About Andres
I’m Andres, and I like to make the reason behind a guitar instruction available to you. If we choose a different fingering, I will explain what it changes: perhaps the next chord becomes easier to reach, a melody note can keep ringing, or the strumming hand gets a cleaner set of strings to use. You can then try both versions and hear the trade-off. Understanding that choice is useful long after the particular song is finished. It also gives us a sensible way to disagree and investigate, instead of treating a diagram as the final answer.
I pay attention to the difference between not understanding something and not yet being able to coordinate it. If you can explain a chord change but your fingers arrive late, another theory explanation may not help. We can slow the physical journey down, change the order in which you prepare the fingers, or make the musical task temporarily smaller. If the movement works but the sound still seems mysterious, we can put the guitar down for a moment and listen. I want you to feel able to tell me which part is unclear, without having to find the technical vocabulary first.
You will have a say in the music we use and the amount of detail we explore. A child may want to turn two chords into a short song; a teenager may be interested in a particular rhythm or sound; an adult may want a reliable accompaniment they can sing over. A more advanced guitarist might bring a harmonic idea that needs clearer expression, while someone returning to the instrument may need familiar music to feel comfortable again. We can give each of those goals a practical next step. My role is to help you make musical choices you understand, so your confidence can rest on what you can actually hear and do.

A chord diagram tells you where to put your fingers, but it does not tell you which sounds are doing the musical work. In our lessons, we will connect the shape to what you hear. Starting with a manageable two-chord song, we can listen to the bass note of each chord, then add a small group of upper strings. You will hear both the change underneath and any notes that remain in common. For a complete beginner, this can make a simple accompaniment feel purposeful before a full six-string shape is comfortable. As your playing develops, it becomes a way to understand voicings and choose how a progression moves.
When changing chords leaves a hole in the rhythm, we will examine the journey between the shapes. Which finger can remain where it is? Which one needs to arrive first? Are you lifting everything away from the strings when a smaller movement would work? We can prepare the destination quietly, then reintroduce a steady strumming motion with a clearly agreed moment for the change. If a full shape is too demanding, we will use a smaller voicing that still belongs to the song. This lets the musical pulse continue while the hand learns its job. Returning students can rebuild familiar changes this way, while intermediate and advanced players can apply the same questions to less familiar inversions and more economical movement around the neck.
Melody and improvisation will grow from hearing the chords, not from running a scale and hoping it fits. We might take a short phrase and choose one note to land on when the harmony changes. You can vary the route and rhythm, then listen to how the arrival affects the whole phrase. At first, that could involve only two or three notes; later, we can compare chord tones, passing notes and the different tension they create. Children can make short musical answers, teenagers can reshape a phrase in a song they like, and adults can connect theory to something immediately playable. Practice will include a song passage and a clear question, so you know why you are working on a movement or a note choice.

Andres tutored me through a linear algebra unit on eigenvalues, where I could grind through the characteristic polynomial but had no real sense of what an eigenvector was doing geometrically. Before any computation, he'd have me sketch what direction a vector might stretch toward under the transformation. I guessed wrong basically every time for the first couple weeks. Eventually the pattern started showing up before the math did. He also caught an arithmetic slip on an old exam that I'd assumed was a conceptual error.
