My approach towards any topic/subject is student based-on his/her earlier knowledge/information about the subject or his/her beliefs about it.
I start from the basic roots of the problem, try to interpret the given situation to an easy everyday model that the student can comprehend.
Thus I can provoke his/her thought process to analyse and evaluate the most of it.
I find it very attractive and effective though it might seem time consuming.
