About John

I work full-time as a professional tutor providing English and Mathematics at KS3, GCSE, and A level in Sussex and London. I offer day-time home-school support, afternoon and evening sessions, specialised Common Entrance support (at level 2, and 3, and scholarship), SEN support, short-term intensive support, and residential placements!

My Approach
I am a friendly, patient, and passionate individual. I am aware that individuals learn at their own pace and am able to provide intervention, extension, or additional support depending on the individual needs of students. Not only I am familiar with taking students in difficult circumstances through the curriculum successfully, I also pride myself in pushing and extending students beyond their potential with motivating and inspiring sessions. Whether you`re aiming for the top grades, or hoping to achieve a pass, I have the experience, resources, and organisational and motivational skills to get you there!

Learning is a lifelong pursuit and this perspective underpins my approach to all of my sessions: I require my students to recognise that no task is ever finished; that the goals they set themselves should always be reassessed and extended; that no matter how well they do, I will only commend the effort they put in, not the outcome; that they should endeavour to nurture and develop their curiosity and passionately pursue the knowledge and skills they require for future success. In my personal experience, tuition is so much more than simply teaching subject material, it is about teaching individuals how to engage with learning so that they become more confident and capable learners.

I have been working as a professional tutor for the last 6 years: working for The East Sussex County Council’s Virtual School for Looked After Children, enabling young people from extremely difficult backgrounds to achieve success and get their lives on track; Tavistock Tutors, enabling “elite” clients’ children to meet the prestigious requirements of entry to some of the most prestigious schools in this country, working in North-East London, but also across the world; and as a local, independent tutor in East Sussex, enabling students to achieve success in their GCSEs, A Levels, and Common Entrance exams for Brighton College, and Lancing College.
I have had the privilege of educating British and European royalty, the children of foreign ministers, and have been enabled to travel the world as an “elite tutor”, enabling students to succeed in gaining entrance to some Britain’s most prestigious schools.
I have had the honour of working with vulnerable young people in the care system enabling them to access education outside of the mainstream school system, enabling them to make progress with regard to their academic, social, and emotional needs.
I have been lucky enough to work with children with diagnoses of ASD, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia, unpicking their individual needs, slowly, to enable them to learn suitable skills at a suitable pace, in a safe and comfortable learning environment, building confidence and enjoyment in their learning.

I am a qualified teacher with a First Class Honours Degree in Linguistics, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, and a Masters in Transformational Leadership within an Educational Setting.

I have been working as a professional tutor for the last 6 years: working for The Virtual School for Looked After Children as a 1-2-1 tutor in East Sussex, Tavistock Tutors as a 1-2-1 tutor in London and abroad, and as a local, independent tutor in East Sussex.

I am a friendly, patient and passionate individual. I am familiar with taking students in difficult circumstances through the curriculum successfully, while also pushing and extending the potential of engaged students further.

Whether you`re aiming for the top grades, or hoping to achieve a pass, I have the experience, resources, and organisational skills to provide the support necessary.

I believe learning is a life long pursuit and hope to instil positive attitudes towards learning in each and every individual I collaborate with. I endeavour to nurture curiosity and facilitate the passionate pursuit of knowledge and skills by communicating a growth mindset perspective - the idea that intelligence is nurtured through hard work, over time.

My strengths:
I have a degree in English Language and Linguistics, a teaching degree, and Masters in Transformational Leadership within an Educational Setting.
I have real experience in taking students through a challenging range of texts and skills so that they are able to successfully complete their GCSE examinations to the best of their ability.
I am familiar with extending pupils who are aiming for A* targets while also pushing students who are aiming for a C grade.
I have a clear and extensive understanding of all exam boards` success criteria and am confident that anyone - with the right support - is able to achieve any goal they set themselves.

Availability: Monday-Friday - 9am-3pm

Experience: I am a fully qualified teacher. This means I have worked as a classroom teacher in a mainstream school: I have real hands-on experience of guiding students through a variety of skill-sets for different exam boards. It also entails that I have a wealth of relevant experience in meeting the educational needs of individuals from all walks of life, alongside all relevant resources required to be successful.

I have been tutoring 1-2-1 for the last 5 years. I have real experience working 1-2-1 and over the last 5 years have developed a range of exceptionally practical resources, an exceptional understanding of the needs of individuals through constructive dialogue and communication, a systematic and motivating process for ensuring learning is not only achieved, but enjoyed.

I have taught, multiple times, the OCR, AQA and IGCSE curriculums, and students have always experienced success.
