About Stephen

Hello, I'm Stephen.

Since 2014, I have taught piano to students of ages from 3 - 70+. I have extensive experience in preparing students from AMEB/TCL exams, as well as non-exam repertoire and styles (pop & jazz are very welcome). I have also tutored composition, specifically for HSC Music, since 2016 and have routinely assisted students in achieving Band 6 results.

At the core of my teaching philosophy is fostering genuine motivation and enjoyment in practicing. This can be a tall order depending on the student, so I am always committed to understanding and outlining their piano growth plans collaboratively. Seeing students exceed their own expectations is profoundly rewarding.

About the lesson

I strive to make lessons an occasion to look forward to, rather than dread!

In addition to building a solid technical foundation and note-reading facility, I am interested in understanding a student's own tastes and selecting repertoire accordingly. I will also occasionally instruct students to listen to other pieces to broaden their horizons, and potentially spur interest in music that was unfamiliar to them.

I generally spend a lot of time understanding how a student practices and working on optimising the process for them. Regular practice is critical for growth, but can seem incredibly boring and draining, so my students and I often test different approaches to find one that works.

Perfect! I cannot recommend Stephen highly enough as a piano teacher! From the very first lesson, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to engage my son and keep his interest alive.
