My teaching method is dependent on the requirements of the student whilst always encouraging students to have a broader appreciation of music. Students who wish to learn through the AMEB syllabus I place a heavy emphasis on technical work, articulation, sight reading, theory and aural training (harmony, interval recognition etc). A student who wants to accompany themselves or others singing would benefit from a bigger focus on chord theory (inversions, smooth voice leading etc) but with technical foundations (scales, arpeggios etc) still heavily emphasised. I always include ear training in every lesson and encourage daily sight reading exercises.
I am a classically trained pianist with a very ecclectic background in the field. I completed my studies majoring in music at Monash University. I have taught piano for the past 15 years at all levels (beginners up to licentiate VCE students)..
recommend 30 min lessons for beginners ($25 per lesson)
Neil was my piano teacher for 8 years, and he prepared me for my AMEB practical exams from Grade 3 to Grade 8. He also taught me how to improvise my own melodies and play pop songs based on chords, which helped me stay engaged, especially when exams felt burdensome.
During that time, Neil was always passionate and enthusiastic and motivated me to work hard and stay focused. I’m very grateful for this, as I still have the skills and technique to play any style of piece now that I’m an adult.
I received piano tuition from Neil over a number of years and cannot recommend him highly enough for both new and advanced piano students. He not only helped me significantly advance my technical skills at the instrument, but he also helped me foster a lifelong passion for the piano and music in general. Whilst I no longer receive tuition from Neil, I still use the knowledge he shared with me every time I play the piano and learn a new piece.
Once again, I highly recommend Neil for anyone wanting to receive piano tuition.
I had Neil as a piano teacher for several years, he was always professional and gave me a lot of room to choose what music to play. He definitely got the best out of me as a player, his great technical teaching and knowledge have really shaped how I now approach and appreciate music.
Neil taught our daughter from ages 7 to 18, which says something in itself. We found that he knew his music but was also an excellent teacher. Our daughter learned how to play music, not just how to hit the right notes. Neil was friendly and flexible and always treated our daughter with respect. With regard to the music teaching, he knew how to catch his student's interest but could also be firm enough to get the best effort from her. Our daughter went on to study science, but her ongoing love of music is thanks to teachers like Neil.
Neal taught me piano for over 10 years. He is a kind, well mannered, professional. Neal's playing skills are exemplary and his teaching method is patient and understanding. I highly recommend Neal as a piano teacher for students with any level of experience.
Neil is a fantastic teacher. His knowledge of music is extremely broad, so whether you want to focus on your classical exams, learn jazz charts, or learn the latest radio music, he can do it. I owe a lot of my music taste to Neil.
