About Apara
I am a girl in the Boy Scouts of America.
Scouts BSA opened to girls just two years ago. As the first girl to propose an Eagle service project to the BSA council, I wanted to make an immense community impact. ProjectPride, a women’s rehabilitation center, needed a safe, family-friendly environment. I had an idea to transform their unused backyard into a women's meditation and children’s play area.
Council’s approval was the next major step. Despite them calling this “ambitious,” my detailed planning and perseverance secured the approval. I mobilized the funds, in just 36 hours, through “GoFundMe” by leveraging social platforms.
Despite the step-by-step planning, two obstacles (glass in the ground and huge roots) appeared, necessitating a blueprint change, on the first workday with 36 volunteers. I adapted and oriented the teams accordingly. In ten hours, 50% was finished: the lawn, garden, and meditation area. With another 25 volunteers, we painted a racetrack, mural and built the playground. The women of Project Pride took the time to send hand-written letters expressing their gratitude. A resident wrote, “The backyard is such a serenity for my treatment and therapeutic for my recovery.”A month later, I visited Project Pride and, to my delight, saw the women and children enjoying the area. I found happiness in the women’s joy, and I strive to spread the same happiness in me to others.
Being a “trailblazer” and completing this 746-hour project to earn the Eagle award, I am proud to have led by example for young girls to undertake large-scale community projects. To be a trailblazer, I realized that ideation, perseverance, planning, motivating, collaboration, adaptability, and influential leadership are essential. The love poured into this brought the community together to create a deep-rooted, positive effect on the women, children, and their generations to come.
