About Sean

I am 25 years old and have gained 12 years of experience as a tutor since I was selected for my school's 'Peer Literacy Tutoring Program' in years 9 and 10. Since then I have tutored both privately and professionally through 'Student to Student Home Tutoring Service' (since 2017), 'Cluey Learning' (since 2021), and Alchemy Tuition (started January 2022). In these positions I have helped students of all levels of ability from year 7 through year 12, as well as students with learning impairments such as ADHD and Dyslexia.

Since completing my HSC in 2016 and gaining 'First in Course History Extension' I have graduated from the University of Newcastle with a 'Bachelor of Arts with Distinction' in Classics and Linguistics (December 2019) and a 'First Class Honours' in Roman political philosophy (May 2021). During my years of study I was placed on the 'Faculty Commendation List' three times (2017, 2019 & 2020) and achieved a GPA of 6.6.

While studying at the University of Newcastle I also graduated from the Irish Archaeology Field School with an 'Introduction to Archaeology' (2018) and an 'Introduction to Forensic Anthropology' (2020).

I am currently a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, and a Divinity student at Ridley College.

About the lesson

When helping students with history I prioritise their ability to analyse sources for themselves, and express their analysis in clear, academic writing. This is of greater benefit to the student than simply memorising facts. It is also more interesting and provides a greater sense of accomplishment and intellectual growth.

Similarly, when offering English tuition I focus on improving the students ability to understand texts for themselves, and to interpret them in light of the larger body of literature with which they are already familiar. All literature exists within a larger conversation and can rarely be understood without reference to that conversation.

For my language students I use the Natural Method approach, rather than the grammar-translation approach. This has the benefit of allowing the student to learn the target language in a similar way to how he learnt his native language. This makes the process more enjoyable, faster and more effective, since it is story-based and focuses on helping the student think in the target language, rather than translate into his native language.

I offer both face-to-face and online tuition and am available between sessions if students have practice exercises they want me to read over or quick questions they would like help with.
