About Igor-Alexandre

Here are some of my experiences as a teacher:

- For over 15 years, I was the coach of GM Teymur Radjabov, one of the greatest names in chess. Under my guidance, he reached the rank of 4th world player in 2012, with an impressive Elo of 2793 FIDE.

- I also have the pleasure of coaching (still doing it!) GM Evgenios Ioannidis since he was 14 years old! His journey speaks for itself: European Under-18 champion, he progressed to become an International Master, and finally a Grandmaster! Currently, his Elo stands at 2519 (as of February 2024).

- Some of my students have managed to achieve International Master norms, well after the age of 40, demonstrating that passion and commitment can transcend age barriers!

- Furthermore, another one of my students, aged only 15, receiving exclusively online lessons, won the prestigious Oceanic Women's Zonal. Her victory earned her the title of Women's International Master and qualification for the 2017 World Cup.

- Currently, I am working with many promising very young players aged 6, 7, and 8 years old! Among them, one has just been crowned Paris Under-8 champion, while another has won the title of Île-de-France champion as well as the bronze medal at the French championships in his category.

- Lastly, one of my students, Oscar, distinguished himself twice by winning the "Kangaroo mathematics contest" (in France), surpassing over 35,000 other participants. His academic success was also illustrated by his admission to the best class at Louis Le Grand High School (best school in France)!

ABOUT ME

I am a 45-year-old French International Grandmaster, boasting a wealth of experience both as a high-level player and as a coach. With a current Elo of 2535, I reside in the Paris region, near Enghien Les Bains.
For those unfamiliar with the world of chess, it is important to emphasize that the title of International Grandmaster represents the highest distinction in this field. There are only around fifty Grandmasters in France and approximately 1700 worldwide, while the game boasts between 600 to 800 million practitioners globally!

Here's a glimpse of my (non-exhaustive!) journey as a player:

- I had the honor of defeating the world champion Magnus Carlsen in an official game (no joke!) and drawing against the great Garry Kasparov (before his retirement in 2005, but he was still the world number one when I played him!).
- Additionally, I reached the Round of 1/16 in the World Championship in 2000 and won several prestigious international tournaments.
My record also includes multiple titles of French champion in youth categories (real titles! not French Blitz champion!), as well as a title of European vice-champion under 14.

My coaching CV in a few lines:

For over 15 years, I had the privilege of being the coach and main second of GM Teymur Radjabov, who reached the prestigious 4th place in the world rankings. We began our collaboration when he was very young, at the age of 14, with an Elo of 2550 FIDE. Through hard work and a strict and rigorous training methodology, I had the pleasure of seeing him progress to an impressive Elo of 2793 FIDE, while also winning the World Cup a few years later (in 2019).

Another of my great achievements as a coach is my Greek student Evgenios Ioannidis (whom I still coach to this day!): when we started working together, his Elo was 2300. Today, like me, he is an International Grandmaster and boasts a flattering Elo of 2519! He was also crowned European under-18 champion in 2018!

In addition to my high-level students, I also have the pleasure of coaching numerous passionate young players aged 6 and older. Some of them have already performed brilliantly in various tournaments, winning titles such as Vice Champion of France, Champion of Paris, Champion of Île-de-France, and many more. I particularly enjoy teaching the youngest ones and passing on my passion for the game to them.

ABOUT MY LESSONS:

I firmly believe in the importance of customizing each lesson according to the specific needs of each student, rather than simply following a predetermined curriculum that may not meet your expectations. Of course, for those who insist... I have all the necessary material for more traditional schooling, but know that I prefer personalization!
As a teacher, I am fortunate to be very versatile, thanks in part to my accumulated experience. For example, during the period when I was the full time second of super GM Radjabov, I had to analyze and learn to master all the chess openings, which is immensely useful to me today for understanding different pawn structures.
We can easily and gladly cover all aspects of chess according to your goals and needs: whether you want to strengthen your opening repertoire, deepen your positional understanding, or refine your tactical sense, I will be there to guide you!

Finally, I can assist you in improving your practical performance by identifying any weaknesses in your play and working on themes related to competition psychology or "process thinking" (the thinking process leading you to find moves). My goal is to help you develop a holistic approach to chess, emphasizing both technical and mental aspects.

As a passionate lover of the game of chess, I have no preference when it comes to the level of my students! I am comfortable teaching highly qualified players, whether they are titled, members of elite clubs, or even players from the world's top ranks. However, I sincerely believe that I also have a lot to offer to less experienced players.
I am convinced that every player, regardless of their level, can benefit from my teachings. I am here to help my students progress, whether it's by developing their strategic understanding, refining their technique, or strengthening their mindset.
For me, the essence lies in the transmission of knowledge. I consider pedagogy to be a fundamental pillar of student progression. Despite my qualifications and experience, I always strive to adapt to each student's level and respect their learning pace.
As mentioned earlier, I work with many young students, and I take great pride in seeing them develop their love for the game of chess through my teachings. My goal is to create a positive and stimulating learning environment where each student feels supported and encouraged to achieve their goals.

I pay great attention to my students, whether during lessons or outside of them, especially if they are participating in tournaments and need to seek my assistance.

Residing in the Paris region (FRANCE) but occasionally visiting UK and some friends ( who live in London), I offer in-person lessons for those living in France (Paris and its surroundings), but occasional lessons in London (Canary Wharf) can also be arranged. For students further away, I prefer the method of online teaching. Online lessons are conducted via Skype, Zoom, or Teams, and accompanied by an online chessboard for interactive visual support, which I have found to be a highly effective method based on my experience.

As you may have noticed, I am also capable of teaching lessons in English if needed, although my native language is French!
