In my lessons the key things we will learn are:
Technique - For the first third of the lesson we will work on technique: this ranges from the first lesson in learning how to hold sticks/foot pedal technique and positioning around the kit; to rudiments and building pace and fluency.
Groove - The second third of the lesson will be focused around some exercises I will give before each class which get the whole bod moving around the kit. These will vary in different styles depending on what you'd like to work on, or what I think we should work on depending on your weaknesses. This could be Jazz, Latin, Rock, Funk, or even experimental!
Songs - The final third of the lesson will be focussed around working on a song. This is a great way to get yourself playing something new and analysing different ways iconic drummers use combinations of grooves and fills to reflect on the mood of a song and give it that extra feel!
This is a basic outline but we will work together to see what is best for you. I also love electronic music and have lots of experience with pads, drum machines and production so if you'd like to incorporate any of that into your playing just ask!
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Music Industry) at RMIT with a key learning outcome of teaching; before this I was - and still am - drumming for Yossarian, a world touring band based in the UK and Keaper, a Melbourne shoe-gaze group. I have played over 200 live concerts and have taught drums privately for 6 years.
I want to have several students in one day in a similar area if doing a live lesson, so it's not just one trip out as I unfortunately can't drive
Perfect! Sam is a great teacher! Well organised, skilled and friendly personality, just the encouragement we needed for our son for drums!
Perfect! Sam is friendly, gentle and great with kids.
Perfect! Sam is a great teacher! He is really patient and helped me feel comfortable when I was nervous, being a beginner. I felt completely at ease as he was understanding and explained things (that I didn't understand) in different ways. He was very encouraging, and I can see that from only doing a few lessons I have improved my technique and my confidence. He provides fantastic material for practising alone between classes. This has helped me to have some structure when I practise and has helped me to master different techniques. I think the best thing about learning from Sam is that he is upbeat, personable and friendly, which is hard to find in a teacher! Good value for good quality lessons!
