About Katie
I have been playing Irish traditional music since I was a teenager and play both Irish flute and tin whistle. I studied ethnomusicology as part of my undergraduate degree and spent a semester abroad at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in Limerick, Ireland, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself more deeply in Irish traditional music and culture.
I have continued playing and learning Irish music over the years, particularly through listening and learning tunes by ear. I love the social and participatory nature of traditional music and the way tunes are shared from one musician to another.
As a teacher, one of my priorities is creating a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental environment where students can learn at their own pace. Learning music should be enjoyable, and I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, trying things out, and building confidence as musicians. Whether you are completely new to music or already play another instrument, I’m happy to meet you where you are and help you discover the joy of playing Irish traditional music.

My lessons are designed for beginners who want to learn Irish tin whistle in a relaxed, encouraging environment. I learned much of my own music by ear, so I especially enjoy helping people develop the confidence to listen to a tune, find the notes, and gradually learn to play it themselves. You do not need to know how to read music to get started.
Lessons are shaped around each student's experience, interests, and goals. We can work on the fundamentals of the tin whistle, learn Irish tunes at a comfortable pace, develop listening and ear-learning skills, and introduce techniques and ornamentation as you progress. I can break tunes into manageable sections and play them slowly so that we can work through them together.
My goal is to make traditional music feel accessible rather than intimidating. I want students to enjoy playing music from the beginning while gradually building the skills and confidence to learn new tunes more independently.
These lessons are best suited to adult and older youth beginners, including complete beginners and people who have some musical experience but are new to the tin whistle or Irish traditional music.
