My lessons usually involve a mixture of language and culture, with a focus on everyday speech and communication.
I also use text books to help students who wish to focus more on the written language. All classes focus on grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and Japanese communication style, but are presented in a practical and engaging way that helps the student excited to continue learning.
Of course, if a student wishes to focus on a specific topic or task, I am happy to create lessons tailored to your needs.
Many of my students are preparing for their JLPT examinations and I help them with any questions or confusion they might have.
I am an English as a Second Language teacher in Sydney who has spent almost 4 years altogether living in Japan.
I originally spent a year on a langauge exchange program, living with a Japanese family and attending Japanese high school. As using English wasn't an option, I had to learn the language quickly.
Since then I have lived in Japan again as a teacher and found the Japanese style of teaching to often be quite outdated and confusing (not to say often boring). Often text books and classes are not set up to engage the mind in the way Australians are used to, and so often we struggle to keep motivated, and learning is much slower than it could be in a more interesting environment.
As a qualified language instructor, I have used the skills I've learned as an English teacher to tutor Japanese students, both here and in Japan. I focus on daily conversation, local dialects, pronunciation, and Japanese culture.
I have tutored high school and university students, as well as people who are just studying Japanese for travel, fun, or a hobby. I have completed my JLPT N2 testing, and have helped students pass up to N3 level.
I am happy to work on any topic that you might want to study, or help you begin from the start of your Japanese learning experience. I also have many Japanese contacts both in Sydney and Japan who have joined my students and I for group chats, coffee, or dinner whilst focusing on practicing the Japanese language.
I prefer to teach Japanese in person, but I am occasionally available for online classes also.
