About Rob

I've had a career working on newspapers and teaching writing and editing skills at university. Since then I've written and edited books, won prizes for my short fiction, and become a mentor.
I'm educated to PhD level. My tutoring approach is friendly, responsive and tailored entirely to your needs and I'm happy with one-off sessions or short series.
I work exclusively with adults and, sorry, but I don't cover academic work such as college or university essays.

About the lesson

In our lessons I'll listen hard, and look at samples of your work. I'll identify strengths and areas for development, using tips and examples to help develop your writing and self-editing skills. We can talk about any or all of structure, voice, grammar, beginnings and endings, ethical/legal issues, target audience, and more. Genres include creative non-fiction, memoir, (auto)biography, history, journalism, blog posts, short fiction, and work that defies categorisation. You may be somewhere between starting out and half way along your writing journey. My aim is to help you make your work shine.

Perfect! Rob is coaching me in my quest to write the story of my family in Shetland over the century from 1850 to 1950. At the moment he is helping me to firm up my ideas. Rob has a very relaxed manner and I feel he totally understands where I’m coming from whilst guiding me in the right direction.
