About Julia
I have a master's in cello performance from McGill Schulich School of Music and a bachelor's from Oberlin Conservatory. I attended the Toho Orchestra Academy in Japan. I love chamber music and have performed at festivals from Center Stage Strings to Bowdoin to Orford to a festival in Germany. I have been principal cellist of the McGill Symphony Orchestra and the Oberlin Orchestra as well as my youth orchestras. Most recently I'm most proud of a grant I won to cohost a symposium, which focused on bringing music disciplines in the music school together to talk to and learn from each other.

Hi! Calling all adults of any level wishing to learn cello, looking for a teacher who will listen to their needs, or just wanting to pick up where they left off long ago.
I have taken Alexander Technique and Body Mapping classes and am aware that the adult body needs sometimes a bit more easing into things. While doing my conservatory education, I also completed other degrees and know that consistent time can be difficult to find with many competing areas of life.
In a lesson I will help you develop goals that interest and motivate you and be your guide in following through. I start with asking what you like but also have a regimen that follows Suzuki books and songs. I like to teach self-regulating strategies as well so students can report to me their own findings and we can work it out together.
Ultimately I believe technique aids musicality, so developing a strong technical understanding of set-up, how to move around the fingerboard, and bowing is invaluable to learning to express oneself.

- Irina has a wonderful attitude towards learning the cello! She's just picking it up for the first time and already has great observations. Look forward to lessons with her.Julia's response :
