About Michael

I've spent a lot of my life learning languages by travelling to and living in the countries that speak them - I learned Japanese in Japan, French in France, and German in Austria! I've always tried to come up with new and interesting ways to make language learning feel natural and enjoyable and I really want to share that with others.

I was a language teacher before I moved to Austria for 3 years to teach English, but I had no German at all at the start. I put in the time and effort to learn - but I did it my way. I didn't become fluent in all areas right away, I first learned to become fluent about the topics that really mattered to me - like how to order the perfect Döner Kebab "mit allem" - and went from topic to topic until learning German just became a part of my every day for what I needed and wanted to talk about.

Becoming a language teacher was the best decision I made to be able to share my love of languages with others and to try my method of using interests in learning. The best lessons I've had are one-to-one tutoring sessions where we get to tailor-make lessons to be about exactly what the learner wants and I can tell stories about my experiences in Austria and Germany. These are my favourites because I get to learn a lot too!

Language learning is fun for a lifetime, and I hope you'll get to understand that the way I do.

About the lesson

The most important part of learning a language is motivation, and that's why we're going to create your lessons together based on your goals. The idea is that each lesson will always teach you German that you actually want to learn and will get you fluent for travel in the ÖSD (Austria, Switzerland, Germany), making friends, or even just watching Kommissar Rex!

However! I won't just teach you German - I'll teach you to learn German yourself. I'll teach you how to make German such a part of your routine you'll barely notice you're learning every day! Your favourite things about German speaking countries - movies, shows, food, Goethe, opera, or anything else - can become your very own study resources. I may not be a native speaker, but I moved to Austria with no German at all and became fluent with a bit of time and effort...that means I really understand what it’s like to really learn German, and I know how to make it fun!

Over my 9 years of teaching, I've used this fun and effective method using the interests of students in classrooms and in one-to-one sessions in Japan, Austria, Australia, and (now!) the UK for learning any language. We can use as much or as little English as you like - tell me what you'd like and we'll make it happen.
