About Catherine

I was born and raised in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium, and have since lived in different countries in Europe. Currently, I live in London.

I hold a Master´s degree in Economics and in Applied Linguistics and have worked in a multicultural environment ever since I graduated.
For over 15 years, I have been teaching Dutch and Business English to professionals and private students, in small groups, one-to-one classes and via webcam. Previous and current clients include: Hôpitaux de l´Europe, AON, Goodyear, Banco Santander, Kraft, FROB, Nfoque, Spanish Ministry of Industrial Development and Worley.

I speak Dutch, English, Spanish and French at a proficiency level, and also speak a word of German.

About the lesson

During our lessons, I create an optimal learning environment with great sense of empathy. I also went through the process of learning to express myself outside my comfort zone and know about the insecurities and challenges that come with it.

The main focus will be on learning to communicate efficiently and fluently, giving you every opportunity to express yourself, whether you need mainly spoken or written practice. Obviously, we will have to look at the necessary grammatical structures, but you will learn that grammar is merely a tool to become an independent learner and can actually help you to bring nuances to your communication. It doesn't have to be tedious nor frightening.

You will use the language in a context that is both functional and useful to you. Classes are dynamic and fun, with a different range of activities to keep you active throughout every session. As a teacher, I will be there to help you discover the correct structures, and guide you where it goes wrong.

We will also pay sufficient attention to culture, as any language is undeniably intertwined with the society of the people who speak it. Learning a language is not so much about being 100% grammatically accurate, but rather about being able to communicate while considering relevant cultural differences and different social conventions. This will help you achieve your communicative goals and avoid possible misinterpretations.

The first lesson with Catherine will allow you to get to know each other and discuss your needs for future lessons.

Details

Fees vary depending on the specific needs of the groups, and start at GBP25 per hour.

Learning a language requires compromise, and as a teacher I dedicate a lot of time and effort in preparing lessons that are tailored to my students' needs. That's why I ask for the lessons to be paid per 10 hours in advance. Lessons can be cancelled up to 24 hours before each planned lesson. Late cancels are charged at 100%.
