About Emily

Emily Newland is a professionally trained actress and producer with a BA in Theater from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television, where she completed four years of rigorous training in acting, directing, producing under longtime faculty, including the department chair. She is represented Untamed Artists LA, and her on-camera credits include a co-star role on St. Denis Medical and numerous SAG Pilots, commercials, and theater. On the producing side, she executive produced UCLA TFT's New Voices Showcase. As a former UCLA Theater ambassador, she also brings firsthand insight into how competitive acting programs evaluate applicants (knowledge she now uses to help students build stronger, more strategic auditions). Her coaching blends technical rigor, real industry experience, and professional representation-level standards, giving students both the tools and the confidence to perform at their best. She wants to encourage students that they are capable, and inspire them to chase after their dreams.

Emily Newland — Acting Coach & Audition/Admissions Prep

About Me

I'm a working actress and producer with a BA in Theater - Acting from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television. My four years in the program went beyond performance — I trained across lighting, scenic design, directing, and film producing.

I've booked professional work (including a role on St. Denis Medical, numerous SAG pilots, national commercials, and theater work), and I served as an ambassador for UCLA Theater, which gave me a direct, insider view of how acting programs actually evaluate applicants...what's really happening behind a callback, and what separates a memorable audition from a forgettable one. I also auditioned and got into NYU, USC, and UCLA - waitlisted for Juilliard, and plan to audition for YALE and Juilliard this winter.

Who This Is For

- High schoolers preparing monologues, scenes, or interviews for BFA/BA acting program auditions (conservatory-style and university programs alike)
- Actors reworking a college audition package — monologue selection, scene partners, personal statements/interview prep
- Adult, teen, and child actors wanting stronger scene study, cold-reading, or self-tape technique
- Actors preparing for a specific audition, callback, or showcase
- Anyone who wants an honest read on how to grow completely tailored to their personal experience and skill level.

My Teaching Method

My approach is built on three things: technique, specificity, and honest feedback.

1. Technique first: We ground every scene or monologue in actionable tools — objective, tactics, given circumstances. If a choice isn't working, we can name exactly why and fix it.
2. Uniqueness: At the core of all of your work should be you. I aim to help students demonstrate their "you-est you" in their work. There are so many talented artists in the world, but no one has the same lived experiences as you. So let's highlight that.
3. Repetition with purpose: I don't just watch you run something twice. Each pass has a specific adjustment attached to it, so you leave every session with visible progress, not just more practice.
4. Insider context: For students prepping for BFA/BA admissions, I layer in what I learned firsthand as a UCLA Theater ambassador — how panels actually watch auditions, common red flags, and what makes a piece memorable in a two-minute slot.

A Typical Lesson

Check-in (5 min): Where are we in the process — is this general technique work, or prep for a specific audition/deadline?

Warm-up (5–10 min): Physical and vocal warm-up tailored to what the scene demands.

Table work (10–15 min): Break down the piece — objective, obstacles, relationship, given circumstances. For admissions prep, this includes discussing why a piece is or isn't a strong fit for the program/panel.

On its feet (20–25 min): Run the piece, get specific redirects after each pass, and immediately re-run with the adjustment applied.

Wrap-up (5 min): Recap what worked, assign specific homework, and set the plan for next session.

For admissions-specific sessions, we also budget time for monologue selection, building a balanced audition package, and interview/personal statement prep.

What Sets Me Apart

- I'm a recent graduate and actively auditioning/ booking, so my notes reflect what I've noticed in the industry right now for young people.

- As a UCLA Theater ambassador, I had direct insight into the admissions process for competitive BFA/BA acting programs — I know what panels are actually looking for, beyond generic audition advice.

- My producing background means I think about pacing, structure, and how a piece reads to an audience or panel — not just the acting choices in isolation.
