Super tutor

Will is one of our best Latin tutors. High-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!

About Will

I am currently a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon taking 700 level (graduate) Latin coursework at the University of Pittsburgh (CMU has no classics department). In high school, I was awarded Maxima Cum Laude on the Advanced Poetry section of last year's National Latin Exam. For my senior project, I translated the entirety of Seneca's Medea into English and staged its final scene. Formerly employed by the Paideia Institute, I tutored a beginner in Latin during 2024's fall semester, and have since tutored many other pupils. As a tutor, I want to be as thorough as possible. Students should never be afraid to ask questions if they don't understand a concept; I am more than willing to elaborate when needed.

About the lesson

I typically begin by introducing a grammatical concept. I then give the student an exercise or two complete based on said concept, often a short translation. After that, I work with the student through Latin Via Ovid or whatever textbook their school uses, having the student translate the required passages while giving pointers and asking grammatical questions similar to what they would find on a test. I am also more than capable of giving homework help.

William Garrity with my student at the Kaufman Center, Lincoln Center - New York City, while he was in high school, before attending college.

I was very pleased with the outcome regarding a student that I referred to him.

The joy that he has in learning and advancing his own knowledge, is constantly communicated to the people he mentors.

He is extremely patient and articulate. He excelled during his extensive study of Latin, emerging with the desire to share this knowledge and enthusiasm with others.
