About Nozibele
I am a native isiXhosa speaker with an MA in Applied Linguistics and active research interests in African epistemology, indigenous knowledge systems, and terminology development. I am passionate about teaching isiXhosa not only as a language of communication, but also as a language that carries history, culture, philosophy, and African ways of understanding the world.
My teaching approach combines applied linguistics methods with authentic, real-world language use. I teach practical and structured isiXhosa for conversation, academic study, and cultural understanding, helping students develop both fluency and deeper insight into how meaning is expressed in isiXhosa social and cultural contexts.
I have experience in curriculum design, academic writing, and university-level isiXhosa teaching, and I use clear, interactive online methods that are well suited to adult learners from different backgrounds and learning goals.
I enjoy working with students who are genuinely interested in African languages, heritage learning, culture, linguistics, literature, and meaningful communication through isiXhosa.

My teaching approach is based on authentic isiXhosa language use in everyday life. Rather than relying only on textbook phrases, I design lessons using examples drawn from spoken isiXhosa and real conversational contexts. This helps students learn how the language is naturally used by native speakers in social, cultural, and academic settings.
I have a background in Applied Linguistics and experience teaching isiXhosa at university level. I also work with spoken isiXhosa corpus research, which means my lessons are informed by how people genuinely communicate in different situations.
For example, word hayi (“no”) can carry different meanings depending on tone, context, and cultural usage. In isiXhosa, hayi may express disagreement, emphasis, surprise, admiration, or even reassurance in everyday conversation. Students therefore learn not only grammar and vocabulary, but also the deeper communicative and cultural meanings behind the language.
I teach in isiXhosa and English, depending on the student’s level and learning goals.
Lessons are interactive, structured, and adapted to individual needs. Students can expect:
• conversational practice,
• pronunciation guidance,
• grammar explained clearly,
• cultural and contextual understanding,
• and authentic listening and speaking activities.
My lessons are suitable for:
• complete beginners,
• intermediate and advanced learners,
• heritage learners,
• university students,
• researchers in African Studies or linguistics,
• and anyone interested in isiXhosa language and culture.
My lessons are primarily designed for adult learners, university students, heritage learners, and researchers interested in authentic isiXhosa communication, African language studies, and cultural understanding.
I especially enjoy helping adult learners gain confidence in speaking isiXhosa naturally and meaningfully.

I met Nozibele in 2010 at a language research workshop for corpus linguistics. She was the host and she made me feel at home. What I like about her and her teaching style is that she is patient, kind and always ready to help. Before I met her, I didn't know what transcribing was, and she not only introduced me to it, but also made sure that I understandood everything about it by teaching me step by step. I never felt alone or left out. Her open door policy and kindness made things much easier for me. Today I have a stable career that puts food on my table because of her. Apart from being a great teacher, she is the best language researcher, and she has great passion for her mother tongue, IsiXhosa.
I am pleased to recommend Nozibele. She is a dedicated individual with strong proficiency in both isiXhosa and English and is able to explain grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context in a way that makes it accessible to learners at different levels.
She has a background in lecturing at the university level. She is very patient, clear in communication, and genuinely passionate about language studies. I have learned a lot from her, and I am certain she will be an asset to the Superprof team.View more recommendations
