I believe it is very important to understand the underlying story behind concepts in coding. My teaching methodology commences with telling the story of 'why' a concept was derived and 'how' it works.
The flowcharts and loops of the codes shall follow after a thorough understanding of the underlying story are revealed. THus, understanding this makes coding,..... Cool!!
During my lessons, I plan to follow this approach over discussions and conversations to keep it casual.
