About Mariel

Hello! I am a licensed professional educator with a deep passion for making language learning accessible, engaging, and highly practical.

Currently, I teach the Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL) Mandarin at the secondary level, where I specialize in designing interactive, student-centered curriculum materials. To ensure I am always bringing the best methodologies to my students, I am also currently pursuing my Master of Arts in Education Major in Language Teaching as a scholar at Angeles University Foundation.

Why Learn With Me?
1. Formal Pedagogical Training: I don't just speak the language; I am professionally trained in how to teach it. I understand the cognitive hurdles of learning a new language and use structured, evidence-based methods to help you overcome them.
2. Curriculum Design Expertise: I actively develop my own learning materials—from interactive review games to clear graphic organizers—meaning your lessons will never be reliant on dry, generic textbook reading.
3. Empathetic Approach: Beyond the classroom, my professional background requires me to communicate complex concepts with empathy and clarity. I know how to break down intimidating information into simple, manageable pieces using whatever language mix—English or Taglish—works best for you.

Whether you are starting from absolute zero or looking to build conversational confidence, my goal is to create a supportive, dynamic space where you can comfortably master Mandarin. I look forward to helping you reach your language goals!

About the lesson

Starting a new language as an adult can feel intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! My lessons are specifically designed for absolute beginners (0% knowledge) who want to build a solid, practical foundation in Mandarin Chinese. Whether you are learning for career advancement, travel, or personal growth, we will start from a completely blank slate and comfortably guide you to an HSK 1 level (basic conversational fluency and comprehension).

What We Will Cover:
1. The Building Blocks: Demystifying Pinyin (the phonetic system) and mastering the four tones with patience and clear, easy-to-follow techniques.
2. Survival Conversations: Learning how to confidently introduce yourself, order food, ask for directions, tell time, and handle basic daily interactions.
3. HSK 1 Vocabulary & Grammar: Systematically covering the essential 150 vocabulary words and fundamental sentence structures required to pass the official HSK 1 proficiency exam.
4. Cultural Context: Gaining practical insights into Chinese culture to help you understand why certain phrases are used, making the language feel more alive and relevant.

My Teaching Style & Classroom Vibe:
a. Empathetic & Stress-Free: I believe in creating a highly supportive, judgment-free zone. Making mistakes is a huge part of learning, and I am here to patiently guide you at your own pace.
b. Interactive & Visual: We will step away from dry, boring textbooks. I use highly interactive materials, clear graphic organizers, and engaging activities to make complex concepts easy to digest.
c. Flexible Communication: While the goal is Mandarin immersion, I am happy to break down difficult grammar rules in English or Taglish—whatever makes you feel most comfortable and helps the lesson click.

As a working adult, your time is valuable. Every lesson is highly structured, goal-oriented, and customized to fit into your busy schedule. Let's make learning Mandarin an enjoyable, rewarding part of your week!️
