About Chantal

I have a BA(hons) in Music with a minor in history from Laurentian University and a Master of Arts in Music with a concentration in women's studies from the University of Ottawa. I have been teaching private lessons since 2011. I have taught at several music schools and now have my own music lessons business (mind-on-music.com)

I have been playing piano since age 8 and trumpet and violin since age 13. Trumpet is my main instrument and I currently play in several ensembles in the Sudbury area: the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, the Northern Brass Choir and the Whispering River Orchestra. You can find me listed on the Sudbury Symphony website: (concealed information)

Music is not only my career, it is my hobby and my compulsion. “Such sweet compulsion doth in music lie.” John Milton

If you are interested in your child completing the Royal Conservatory of Music exams to gain high school credits, I'm the teacher for you! I am a qualified RCM teacher and have taken the Teaching Elementary and Intermediate Piano courses through RCM's online platform. I have never had a student fail an exam or receive a grade below 70%.

I have experience teaching in a private lessons setting but also in elementary classrooms, since I taught at a Catholic School a few years ago. I was a grade 6/7 homeroom teacher and taught music and art to special needs in the afternoon. I enjoy creating engaging lesson plans and motivating each individual to become excited about learning.

My students are provided with a strong musical foundation that will prepare them for their musical path, whether it be a career or lifetime hobby.

Music is more than simply playing notes on a page, as it encompasses various art forms such as dancing, singing and storytelling; these elements are incorporated into my lessons.

Regardless if music is a hobby or a career, all areas of music are covered in each lesson to show all that music has to offer; theory, history, sight reading, ear training, and learning repertoire. I seek to find the area of music that will spark your love for music and compel you to this wonderful and joyous pastime.

I really enjoy teaching all ages and levels as I love providing lessons tailored specifically to each individual's learning style and needs. I am versed in a vast array of methods for the instruments I teach. One of my hobbies is collecting method books. I enjoy exploring various methods to find the right method that works for you and/or your child. I also specialize in teaching the Wunderkeys method for ages 2+. This was a method I discovered when I was asked to teach two sisters who were 2 and 3 years old. After 6 months of lessons, each student was able to identify quarter and half notes, and the values of each, as well as find middle C on the piano and play short rhythm-based songs on middle C. Any age can learn and we are never too young to have fun with music!

I believe that music and learning should always be enjoyable and fun. Learning music should never be a stressful experience! I like to include music games and play-based activities in my lessons. Games are tailored to the age group of the student but also each individual's learning style and preference. I am always making new music games (i.e. weekly) to keep lessons fresh and exciting. Games can also be played in online lessons, it is just a bit different than in-person.
