  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am from Spain so my mother tongue is Spanish.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

    Don Quixote de La Mancha
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

Salir a la Fresca : When the sun goes down, the locals of different villages in Spain huddle together to talk about a different topic - the call to get ir a la fresca (charla al fresco) or alfresco chats. Older men and women who go out but it depends on the villages and neighbourhoods, but there are areas that are still full of groups chatting. For many, it is a time they can tell each other about their day - it's almost therapeutic."

There is no lack of open doors or collections of colourful chairs on the pavement. That is, until someone comes out and yells: "It's already midnight, we need to go to sleep". When the sun was at its highest at the start of August, the homes deflected the 35ºC heat. At sunset, it was barely 22ºC and dropping. There was a lot to discuss; besides the lottery win, Covid-19, politicians, and Brexit. The truth is it's more entertaining than the social networks."
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Spanish is the most most spoken language in the world and you can communicate with 400 million people.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Generally speaking, the main difficulties in learning Spanish are not related to the language itself. The native language of the learner plays a big role, depending on how close it is to the language that one wants to learn. Obviously, learning Spanish will be easier for a French student than for an English student. The same thing can be said for an Italian or Portuguese student, because they are romance languages which are closer to Spanish, while an English student will have to face concepts that do not exist in their native language.
    Here are some of them:
    · Gender, number, and grammar agreement. Gender and number are features that make words feminine or masculine, singular or plural.
    · Verbal forms. In order to speak Spanish fluently, one must master the different verbal tenses in three moods: indicative, subjunctive, and imperative. Some verbal forms are regular and many others are irregular, what may drive even the most devoted student crazy.
    · "Ser y estar". One of the most troublesome chapters in Spanish is related to the use of these two verbs. In Spanish, we use these two verbs for functions which other languages solve with just one verb, and this represents one of the most original features of our language.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

"In my school (at age 13), we had the choice between French and Italian as a third language -- after English (second language) and Spanish (my mother tongue). When I asked what my third language should be, people advised me not to take Italian because it was "difficult". So I took French just because people around me were learning that language.
Many years later, I subscribed to cable TV where there was one Italian channel. I started to watch programmes in that language and I liked it. So I decided to learn Italian seriously.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Spanish is my mother tongue, but learning English myself and moving to England has helped me to understand how in a practical level we need to learn a language and that makes my method of teaching more interesting.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I think I am a Superprof in Spanish because I have a dedicated passion for Spanish and a love for learning. On a practical level, I am a teacher who tries to motivate students to use Spanish language as much as possible and inspire a passion for the language and culture.
