About Nonsikelelo

My credentials include a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering from Vaal University of Technology and an Assessor Certificate from REATS training services. I am currently a private tutor for math and physics for high school students (grades 8–12). (online and onsite). I am currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Education in the Senior Phase, as well as further education and training in teaching at UNISA (with a focus on Mathematics). I have registered with the South African Council for Educators. I have been working with students for five years. The interaction that I am exposed to with students has developed my skills further. My deepest joy in working with students is seeing them improve their performance through my input.

  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in mathematics when I was in high school, around 2000. I used to assist my friends who were struggling with mathematics.I developed an interest in mathematics when I was in high school, around 2000. I used to assist my friends who were struggling with mathematics.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach and the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My focus is on Mathematics and physics. In mathematics, I actually cover all the topics, although when it comes to geometric theorems, I prefer that students prove them for themselves, and I assist in calculations.
  • Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher inspired you.

Yes, definitely. They are actually two people who inspired me on my journey. My dad and William Smith. Before the internet and YouTube came into the picture, we used to race to our television just so that we could improve our Mathematics and physics. He was so good that when you just listen to him attentively, you won't need to attend your classes. I remember ratios and proportions. William Smith taught me in a way that no one else ever did. I'm actually becoming emotional just talking about him, and I wish I could meet him just to say thank you. He did so much to improve education in South Africa
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

You need to love your work and the students. One needs to have passion and be flexible enough because kids are not the same,to be the best tutor, you need to understand them and apply the teaching methods that work best for them.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

I remember when I was in grade 12, my mathematics teacher called me in front of all the learners to explain my secret in mathematics because he said he remembered very well some of the questions that were in the question paper; he did not do them in the class, but now that I got them all right, he can't remove them from the paper. It was a common examination. I just smiled; my secret was Mr. William Smith.

Since now he is old and not even around South Africa, I just want to make a difference for our young stars in South Africa and beyond. My job is beyond money; it is the passion I have for teaching. I know many kids out there have the wrong mentality when it comes to Mathematics and physics.
  • Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

Yes, I did. My challenge was that I used to always challenge my lectures by coming up with alternative methods, and at some point it will feel like I'm trying to be a lecture, but that was not my point. I always like to have more than one method of solving problems and stick to the one that is simpler and faster.

I like to make life easier.

Simplifying the sophisticated is my drive.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

My passion is teaching. Before teaching, I did electrical engineering since my dad was also in that field. He encouraged and inspired me to do it, but when I was doing my final year practicals, it dawned on me that being good at something doesn't necessarily mean you will have passion for it. I was good at mathematics and physics but did not have a passion for working with electricity.
My passion is to work with people.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

The zeal I have for kids and the passion I have for the subjects make me outstanding.
