Cartooning is a form of illustration that typically features humorous or satirical drawings. The term “cartoon” is derived from the Italian word “cartone”, which means “big paper”. The first cartoons were created in the 17th century by Italian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
Cartooning became popular in Australia in the late 19th century. The first Australian cartoonist was John Leech, who began publishing cartoons in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1864. Leech was followed by other notable Australian cartoonists, including David Low, Norman Lindsay and Reginald Wilenski.
Australian cartoonists have often used their cartoons to satirise political and social issues. In the early 20th century, David Low was one of the most famous political cartoonists in the world. His cartoons were published in newspapers and magazines in Britain and the United States.
Today, there are many talented Australian cartoonists, including Michael Leunig, Bill Leak and Cathy Wilcox. Australian cartooning is highly respected and popular both locally and internationally.
Cartooning is a great way to improve your drawing skills. It can also be a lot of fun! In cartooning classes, you will learn how to create characters, backgrounds, and scenes. You will also learn how to use humor and exaggeration to make your cartoons more interesting.
When it comes to learning cartooning, there’s no better way to get started than with a private teacher. Here are four reasons why:
1. You get personalised attention
A private teacher can focus on your individual needs and help you progress at your own pace. They can also give you feedback on your work and help you develop your skills.
2. You learn from an expert
A private teacher is an expert in the field of cartooning. They can teach you the techniques and skills you need to create amazing cartoons.
3. You get more practice
With a private teacher, you’ll get more practice than you would in a classroom setting. This is because you’ll have one-on-one time with your teacher, which means you can work on your cartoons at your own pace.
4. You have fun!
Learning cartooning can be a lot of fun. With a private teacher, you’ll be able to explore your creativity and learn new techniques in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.

Fantastic lesson with David. His drawings are amazing and he has a great set up with 3 cameras and he can draw by holding the pencil from the end which means you see everything he draws as his hand is not in the way. Highly recommend!
