Drawing rests on five core skills that work together to create realistic, expressive artwork.

• Line and contour: contour drawing trains your eye to follow edges closely and translate them onto paper.
• Shape and proportion: proportion means judging how parts relate in size, so a head stays in balance with the body.
• Tone and shading: adding light and dark values gives your drawing depth and a three-dimensional feel.
• Perspective: perspective lets you show depth on a flat surface, making objects appear closer or farther away.
• Composition: rules like the rule of thirds and focal points help create balanced, engaging drawings.

Working with a tutor speeds up progress because they correct habits before they become ingrained.

You can absolutely learn to draw on your own, but a structured approach makes a big difference.

• Start with basic exercises: warm-up drills train your hand-eye coordination and loosen your wrist.
• Draw from observation: observational drawing teaches you to measure angles, proportions and light accurately.
• Follow a curriculum: free resources like Drawabox or structured YouTube series give you exercises in a logical order.
• Sketch daily: even fifteen minutes a day builds muscle memory and visual awareness over time.

Combining self-study with occasional private lessons gives you the best of both worlds.
