About Sorour

I'm Sorour, a multidisciplinary visual artist and educator based on Russell Island, QLD.

My teaching approach combines practical instruction with exploration and play. I aim to create a relaxed, encouraging environment where you can build skills, try new things and develop confidence at your own pace.

I enjoy helping others discover and develop their creative abilities. I believe learning art is about more than mastering techniques. It's also about becoming curious, observing the world more closely, experimenting with ideas and finding satisfaction in the process of making.

My artistic practice spans drawing, painting, mixed media and textile art. I hold postgraduate qualifications in visual arts from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, and the University of Edinburgh, and have exhibited my work in Australia and internationally.

You don't need previous experience or a special talent to begin. Just bring your curiosity and willingness to explore.

English

My lessons are designed for adults who want to learn art, develop their skills or reconnect with their creative side.

Whether you're a complete beginner, returning to art after a long break, or looking to explore new techniques, lessons are adapted to your interests, experience and goals.

I teach three interconnected areas:

DRAWING

Learn to observe and translate what you see into lines, shapes, tones and forms. Explore drawing fundamentals and techniques such as:

- Line, shape, proportion and composition

- Light, shadow and tonal values

- Hatching and cross-hatching

- Stippling and mark-making

- Continuous line drawing

PAINTING

Explore colour, and different ways of working with paint. Develop an understanding of materials and techniques while learning to make your own creative decisions.

MIXED MEDIA

Experiment with combining materials, textures and techniques. Explore collage, layering, mark-making and other approaches to create interesting and personal artworks.

HOW WE LEARN

My teaching approach brings together four elements:

Skill: Learn practical techniques and develop your understanding of materials.

Exploration: Experiment, observe and discover different ways of making.

Play: Try things out, take creative risks and allow unexpected results to happen.

Self-expression: Develop your own ideas and creative voice through the process of making.

The aim isn't simply to follow instructions or produce a perfect picture. It's to develop skills you can use independently, while enjoying the experience of making art.

Lessons can be tailored to your interests and learning pace.

Materials and equipment

Students provide their own art materials for lessons. Before we begin, we'll discuss the materials you'll need based on your chosen subject, experience and learning goals. I'll keep the recommendations practical and affordable, particularly if you're just starting out.

You don't need to purchase an extensive collection of art supplies to begin learning.

Lesson locations and format

Lessons are available in two formats:

Online: Learn from the comfort of your own home through online sessions.

Both formats offer personalised instruction, practical demonstrations and individual guidance.
