Every drawing builds on a handful of foundational techniques you can practise from day one.

• Line and contour: mastering line quality means controlling weight, flow and direction with confidence.
• Shape and proportion: seeing shapes first keeps your drawing accurate and saves you from erasing later.
• Tone and shading: shading turns flat shapes into solid forms by showing where light hits and where shadow falls.
• Perspective: understanding vanishing points helps you draw buildings, roads and interiors convincingly.
• Composition: composition is how you arrange elements on the page to guide the viewer's eye.

Working with a tutor speeds up progress because they correct habits before they become ingrained.

A private drawing lesson in Florey costs approximately $28/h.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• Your skill level and learning goals
• The instructor's credentials and portfolio
• The number of hours booked
• The lesson format (online, at home, at the tutor's studio)

Online lessons are often more affordable while still delivering quality feedback on your work.

Self-taught artists succeed when they follow a clear plan instead of sketching randomly.

• Start with basic exercises: simple shape exercises give you the motor skills every drawing depends on.
• Draw from observation: still-life practice is one of the fastest ways to sharpen your eye.
• Follow a curriculum: working through lessons sequentially builds skills that reinforce each other.
• Sketch daily: consistency matters more than long sessions; short daily practice outperforms weekend marathons.

That said, a tutor can spot mistakes you might not notice on your own and help you progress faster.
