Every drawing builds on a handful of foundational techniques you can practise from day one.

• Line and contour: mastering line quality means controlling weight, flow and direction with confidence.
• Shape and proportion: seeing shapes first keeps your drawing accurate and saves you from erasing later.
• Tone and shading: shading turns flat shapes into solid forms by showing where light hits and where shadow falls.
• Perspective: one-point and two-point perspective are the most common systems beginners learn.
• Composition: a strong composition turns a collection of objects into a unified piece of art.

A private drawing tutor can assess which of these skills needs the most attention and build targeted exercises around it.

A private drawing lesson in Brisbane costs approximately $45/h.

Several factors influence the final price:

• Your skill level and learning goals
• The instructor's credentials and portfolio
• The package you choose (casual or regular)
• Where the sessions take place

Many tutors offer package discounts when you book multiple lessons in advance.

Self-taught artists succeed when they follow a clear plan instead of sketching randomly.

• Start with basic exercises: simple shape exercises give you the motor skills every drawing depends on.
• Draw from observation: still-life practice is one of the fastest ways to sharpen your eye.
• Follow a curriculum: working through lessons sequentially builds skills that reinforce each other.
• Sketch daily: keeping a sketchbook habit turns drawing into second nature.

A drawing teacher offers personalised feedback that no tutorial can replicate, saving you weeks of trial and error.
