The Road to Becoming a Nurse in Cairns
Training to become a nurse is a long road and working in health care presents its own special challenges, from memorising medical knowledge to working on clinical skills through placements.
Students in Cairns have three options for their mode of study:
- An on-campus course in Cairns;
- An on-campus program in another Australian city; or
- An online degree from any Australian institution.

Choosing the Right Nursing Course in Cairns
Being a smaller city, there is not quite the same range of degree program choices for nursing as you might find in a bigger city in Australia. If you're willing to move to another area like the Gold Coast, you can have access to more TAFE diploma courses, university bachelor programs or graduate certificates. However, there are still some great options we can look at in Cairns itself.
Before beginning any course, a student must decide if they'd like to become a registered nurse or an enrolled nurse (RN or EN). In terms of day-to-day work, there are some key differences between the two:
- An EN is always supervised in their work by an RN and generally assists with daily tasks like hygiene, exercise and more.
- An RN can have more responsibilities, like supervising a team, as well as more promotion prospects year by year. They can also specialise in fields like midwifery.
In terms of degree requirements, an EN can start work with a Diploma of Nursing from a TAFE or other institution, while an RN needs a Bachelor certificate as a minimum.
Get a Diploma of Nursing in Cairns
There are a few options to choose from that offer this type of certificate program in Cairns, making it easier to find a campus in your part of the city. The two main choices are:
- TAFE Queensland
- CQ University Australia
A full-time student will take around 18 months to 2 years to complete this course, studying and training 4 days a week. These courses usually have similar intakes to that of a university, around January or February and again in June or July. The full fee for this course is around $22,000, but there are plenty of fee discounts for concessions and other students that take the fee down to around $13,000. A minimum of 400 hours of placement is required during the two years to complete a diploma.
Study for a Bachelor of Nursing
James Cook University (JCU) is the only option for students who are looking to study nursing in-person on-campus, but this doesn't mean it's not a great option. In fact, according to the Good Universities Guide, JCU is the #1 option in Qld for employment outcomes.
The Bachelor of Nursing Science has two intakes of students in a year, in February and July. Completing this degree program takes around 3 years of full-time study, including multiple placements in different contexts. With each placement, students will receive training specific to a certain clinical context. The yearly fee is around $5,500 for Australian students.
The entry requirements for Bachelor studies are a little more challenging when compare to those of the diploma. To gain admission to Nursing Science at JCU, students need a minimum ATAR of 66-67, depending on the year and the intakes. After graduating, you will be eligible for registration as an RN with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
TAFE and University as an International Student in Australia
Australia is well-known in the health care field for providing excellent education both in diploma and degree programs. For international students who want to apply for in-campus mode study, there are a few requirements.
Firstly, you must have a student visa for the duration of your full-time degree. Applying for this includes English language criteria, which will prove essential in your studies, especially in your health care placement. In order to prove your English skills are at the right level, you must complete an exam like Cambridge, IELTS or TOEFL and achieve the minimum English level needed for entry.
