If you want to spend your university years gaining knowledge and skills that will enable you to care for and support vulnerable people in your professional work, then nursing could be a great career choice. Becoming a nurse is a difficult journey, with lots of requirements involved, but once you start your years in a professional health care career, it's sure to be a rewarding experience.
For students in Brisbane looking to apply for a Nursing course, whether Bachelor or Graduate Diploma, there are plenty of options across the state. If you're willing to transfer or complete some units online instead of on-campus delivery, you could also consider courses Australia-wide. There is also a range of choices once you graduate, from aged care to midwifery. Let's check out some of the education options for a student in Brisbane...
The first step for all Nursing students is deciding whether they want to gain entry to a course that enables them to become a registered nurse (RN) or an enrolled nurse (EN). The main differences between the two are the types of responsibilities each can have and the minimum education qualification required. An RN must be a graduate from a Bachelor program, whereas an EN needs to complete HLTENN units to gain their Diploma of Nursing. An EN can work in the majority of health care situations, but possibilities for promotion may be fewer than those of an RN after a few years.
You can gain entry to a Diploma of Nursing program at almost any professional TAFE in the country and full-time students complete around 25 units plus 400 or so hours of vocational placement so they can put their knowledge and skills into practice in a clinical setting. The study fee changes from TAFE to TAFE, but the full fee will be around $22,000 for a study duration of two years.
Looking instead at a Bachelor program, entry requirements are usually higher, and a minimum ATAR of around 80.00 is required. Remember, students can always get help from a private tutor in their final high school years, in person or online to meet those requirements. You may get a higher ATAR, making you able to apply for more courses across Australia. The fee for most of these courses is around $5000 per year, making the full fee for a 3-year course duration around $15,000, plus some extra costs for materials, placement etc. The most popular Nursing courses for a student in Brisbane are at Griffith University and the Queensland University of Technology.
For international students wanting to apply to a university program in Australia, there are some extra requirements, mostly related to English language skills. Of course, the unit delivery and placements at any campus in Australia will be completely in English, so your language skills must be at a very high level. To apply for a student visa, you need to study and prove your English language level through an English language test like IELTS or Cambridge. Students are required to achieve between 6.5 and 7.0 on the IELTS scale before they can apply.
In all of these courses, students will have choices related to the delivery of the units. You can do some units online and others, specifically any unit that works on clinical skills, on-campus, or decide to work on campus for every unit. Every study unit will provide students with knowledge about providing care, as well as the practice of clinical skills. To get your certificate, you will also be required to complete placements in different hospital units, to get some hands-on experience.
After getting your certificate, you may want to continue to learn and become a specialist nurse. Here are some different areas of Nursing that may inspire you during your placements...
Like any career, each nurse is going to be interested in different parts of the job over their years of education. You might notice that you particularly loved your placements in a paediatric unit, or want to gain more knowledge of working in critical care. In this case, you can try a year-long graduate certificate, which you can often study for along with your normal program.
Common post-graduate career choices include:
A private tutor can play an important role in your education over the duration of your Bachelor, Diploma or Graduate Certificate program. As we mentioned before, students have to meet minimum entry requirements, including English language and ATAR scores. If you're worried about meeting those requirements, a tutor can help you learn and feel confident so you can get the minimum scores you need to apply.
Every student needs a little bit of help, especially those taking on full-time study that includes placements. Superprof nursing tutors have had the same study experience, so they understand the stress a student is under and where they might need more study over the duration of the course and their placements. You can use your tuition time on academic skills, like writing and presenting, asking questions about things not understood in class, or practising clinical skills. An international student might also want the help of a tutor to work on their English-language skills before taking a placement test.
Whether you're an Australian student who needs extra practise before a test, or you're an international student who needs a little practice with their English language skills private tuition can help you both to apply and to get the best out of your Nursing course. You can look at some of the online profiles to find a teacher in Brisbane that can help make your years of Nursing study a less stressful experience. You can even look at lessons online, which are offered by tutors all over Australia. You can find information about nursing and health care experience, hourly fees and more...
