FAQs

🧬 What are the four types of learning in psychology?

Learning falls into four broad categories in psychology: conditioning (classical and operant), observation, and insight.

  • Classical conditioning connects an unrelated trigger to an involuntary behaviour. Think of Pavlov's dogs, who learned to drool at the sound of a bell.
  • Operant conditioning uses consequences to increase or decrease actions. Praising effort makes students more likely to try again.
  • Observational learning means copying behaviours we see in people around us. Children pick up habits by watching parents or peers.
  • Insight learning describes grasping a concept without trial and error. This explains breakthroughs that seem to arrive out of nowhere.

Knowing these categories lets you study smarter and retain more.

💰 What is the price of a psychology lesson in Geelong?

Psychology tutoring in Geelong typically costs $38/h per hour.

What you pay depends on:

  • Your academic stage (Year 11–12, uni, or honours level)
  • Your tutor's background (years of teaching, degrees held)
  • How long and how often you meet (one-off sessions vs weekly bookings)
  • Lesson format (video call, face-to-face, or hybrid)

Choosing online lessons often reduces fees while keeping quality high.

⚡ What are the four goals of psychology?

The discipline is built around describing, explaining, predicting, and influencing human behaviour.

  • Describe — Psychologists start by detailing thoughts, feelings, and actions objectively.
  • Explain — Next comes finding the causes behind the pattern.
  • Predict — Good theories let researchers anticipate outcomes.
  • Control — Therapies and interventions stem from this goal.

A tutor can show you how each goal connects theory to real-world applications.

How to Get Started Studying Psychology in Geelong and How a Private Tutor Can Help You

Long before the end of Year 12, students in Australian high schools must choose whether they want to gain admission into further education and, if they do, what learning area to apply for. A popular education and career choice across Australia is psychology. Though it's a long road, including both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, thousands of students decide to enrol in psychology degrees every year.

Studying this fascinating science is ideal for those who want to better understand the human behaviour of the people and society around them, as well as provide services to help them through mental health issues. This science is not new, and for hundreds of years, scholars have tried to study and analyse the human mind and its behaviour. Not only is psychology an inherently fascinating subject, but it also contributes in a positive way to human development on both an individual and societal level.

Firstly, having a developed understanding of psychology allows us a better assessment of our inner self. Working through therapy and counselling can make it easier to change negative behaviour and start building healthier relationships with the people around us, having a positive effect on both them and us. Psychology is also an important study for society as it can help us provide services to the people who are most vulnerable in our communities, from refugees to war veterans, based on science and biology.

If you're a student to wants to apply for a diploma or degree in this faculty, whether at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, remember that, while it can be a challenging road, you'll be rewarded with a fascinating career that can take you to unexpected places.

Where to Study Psychology in Geelong at Different Levels

For students who want to start on the path to a career in psychology, the first step is gaining admission into undergraduate studies at a university. Deakin University is the best option for students in Geelong, as it offers a range of course focuses and the campus is based in Waurn Ponds.

Some of the courses offered by Deakin University including Psychology units are the Bachelor of Health Sciences, the Bachelor of Psychological Science and the straight Bachelor of Psychology. Most of these Deakin University courses are 3-year courses that offer an optional year extension for honours.

Admission is generally based on ATAR including, for school-leavers, a study score of at least 30 in English or English as an Additional Language. If you want to join one of these courses more than two years after leaving high school or don't have an ATAR, the university also offers assessment as professional and life experience as paths to gain admission. The minimum ATAR required is usually around 80.00.

During each unit of the degree, students will look at a different aspect of the science of psychology, from units on the fundamentals of human behaviour to the biology of the brain and international research methods. Students will also study the clinical and psychological assessment skills you'll need to provide certain types of counselling and therapy.

After graduating from this Deakin University degree, students can go into areas like counselling, public health services or developmental psychology. However, to gain admission to the Psychology Board of Australia, the units in an undergraduate course won't be quite enough. The next step after a student's first degree is to continue into a two-year Master's course. This will allow you to go further in your professional career in both an Australian and international context.

Deakin University offers three areas of Master's study:

  • Master of Psychology (Clinical)
  • Master of Psychology (Organisational)
  • Master of Professional Psychology

After completing one of these, you can apply for admission to the Psychology Board and begin to provide psychological assessment and counselling as a qualified psychologist.

A Private Tutor Can Help at Any Stage of Your Psychology Education

As we've already mentioned, becoming a professional psychologist will be a long road that poses a group of challenges, from getting the right ATAR to gain admission to the course to feeling comfortable providing clinical therapy services or writing a Master's thesis before graduating. It's normal to need a little bit of help throughout your diploma studies, and this is where private education comes in.

No matter what problems you come up against as you work through each unit of your degree, a tutor will be able to provide the support and knowledge to work through them. You can use your time to focus on difficult concepts in your biology unit or to work on English skills to ensure you get the ATAR you need.

Private courses are also great in that they can be flexible in location and timing as well as the content. You're free to choose how many hours you'd like to study a week, and where you want your classes to take place, whether it's the Deakin University campus, your home or online. You can even choose to do a group course with other students.

So, we know what a student can get out of private studies, but what about where to find a great teacher? It's important to find a tutor who knows the course well and works with students' criteria. Some aspects to consider could be:

  • Are they based in your local area?
  • What qualification level have they reached? Bachelor? Masters? Doctorate?
  • Where did they get their diploma or degree?
  • Have they got professional experience in the Australian psychological health sector?
  • Do they have any specialisations that can apply to units in your studies?

Finding the right tutor isn't about spending hours looking, but about being able to apply the right filters to streamline your search. Superprof is a great resource as you can find information about tutors across Australia, including their experience, fees and more.

Whether a student is just starting their first university diploma or they're writing their thesis for their Master of Clinical Psychology, private courses with professional tutors can help them get further in their studies!
