Trained both musically and in theatrical forms, James Halloran offers piano and vocal lessons with an edge. Holding a bachelors degree in jazz singing, James understands that as a musician, it is just as important to captivate an audience with a performance as it is to have great technique.
The aim of my lessons is to provide students with the techniques required to develop excellent habits, which can always lead to excellent results if practised. For the first few weeks, students will be guided through a healthy vocal warm up to start each lesson, but ideally, in due course they will be able to warm up on their own before the lesson in order to maximise the time we have.
I attempt to have a fun approach to my lessons. A typical lessons with me will include of a 5-10 minute warm up, specificity chosen and adapted for the student. The rest of the lesson will then comprise of working on technique and songs. I try to work my lessons around the student making sure their enjoyment and goals are being reached by the end of each session.
I believe that empathy is the key to a good learning enviroment, and being flexible towards the student's needs is what makes our time together an accomplishment. Body, mind, art, and emotions are all part of the music journey, and taking care of all these aspects is what will make you understand and go deep into music.
A strong technical foundation is key to developing a versatile voice. Enjoyment is key to learning. We sing with our ears. Run your own race. You gotta learn the rules to break them.
I am a strong believer of every individual's unique style when it comes to Artistic performance so when I teach I am protective of my students uniqueness. With that in mind, I prefer to start from teaching basic breathing techniques and vocal drills.
I have a hands on approach. I don't believe you need to know the anatomy of the voice when beginning. I think it is important to just 'sing lots', to give the voice lots of use and to find ways to make it fun. To sing things we enjoy while finding ways to explore new ideas and challenges.
I believe students learn best when they are relaxed, comfortable and most importantly, enjoying themselves! I aim to teach in a patient, safe and fun manner that will assist singers in developing their musical confidence, technique and help them in finding their own unique voice.
I will show you the healthy way to produce your sound. Vocal exercises and warm ups will be different to each student depending on their goals.
Doesn't matter your age or your experience, even if you find it hard singing outside your shower, or get shaky fingers each time you have to play piano in front of someone, after all the technique work that will perfect your skill and help you become more confident, at the end of the day I just want to show you the joy of music! I am happy to supply music for you, but 100% encourage you to pick...
My lessons would be geared towards younger students, but I am comfortable teaching people of all ages. Lessons would not only involve learning songs, but learning the techniques and ideas that make the songs, and how to use your voice safely.
I believe in helping my students find their own unique voice. In the lesson we will work on exercises to strengthen your voice and boost your confidence as a performer, and apply these exercises practically as we work through a variety of songs of your choosing (with guidance from me). We will sing along with a recording, a cappella and with guitar accompaniment.
