About Thomas
Hi, my name is Tom Burton. I am a 19 year old undergraduate student studying a joint degree in Biology and Mathematics at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. I offer lessons in GCSE, AS and A Level Biology to students online.
Obtaining top results in GCSE and A level Biology requires proper planning, intensive revision and extensive preparation. My teaching strategy involves taking into account the needs of the student and working out which method of teaching is most suited to them. I predominantly use power points, notes and past paper questions when teaching and effectively preparing for exams. However I am prepared to construct mind-maps, flashcards and other visual means of delivering the content depending on the students preferences. I have an extensive knowledge of the Cambridge CAIE IGCSE, AS and A Level Biology syllabi, but can of course teach other examining board specifications (AQA, EDEXCEL, OCR, WJEC, OxfordAQA etc).
Alongside Biology tutoring, I proofread UCAS personal statements and offer lessons on constructing a competitive application to top U.K. universities. I also provide tips and mock interviews for students interviewing for STEM degrees. The University of St Andrews currently ranks 1st in the U.K. in the Sunday Times Good University Guide.
I was born in South Africa and grew up in Windsor, outside London. I spent the last 5 years of high school in Mauritius, sitting my IGCSE and A Level examinations there. I recently sat CAIE (Cambridge) A levels in June 2021, achieving A*A*AAA in Biology, English Literature, Mathematics, Chemistry and Marine Science (Self-taught AS), ranking within the top 10 students across Mauritius for this examination series. I obtained 8A* and 1A at IGCSE, including A*'s in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English.
Prior to embarking on my degree in Biology and Mathematics, I volunteered in multiple schools and taught IGCSE Biology and Chemistry to students within Mauritius. I am passionate about teaching and sharing my knowledge and tips of excelling in examinations and applying to U.K. universities. I understand how intimidating sitting external exams can be; I will strive to teach in a dynamic and friendly way. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and look forward to meeting new students and supporting them on their educational journeys.
