About Francesca

Young language teacher based in Glasgow.
I have studied Mandarin Chinese for over 8 years, and have studied for one year in Tianjin (Mainland China) at Tianjin Normal University, graduating with a Level 5 HSK qualification.
I am currently an Undergraduate student at the University of Glasgow, studying Comparative Literature with Russian.
As a native Italian, I have also taught Beginner's Italian for Language4Water, giving me the experience necessary to introduce students to a new language and develop their existing knowledge through online lessons.
Being a lover of languages and cultures different from my own, I am proud to contribute to the world of language learning and teaching. Having gone though the language learning process, I would describe myself as an understanding, patient, and extrovert teacher who aims to bring out the student's strengths and apply them to their language learning.

About the lesson

For tutoring lessons to be effective, I believe they should be tailored to each individual student's needs and preferences. This includes taking into consideration the student's; previous knowledge of other languages (if any), style of learning (repetition/memorisation/logic), strengths and weaknesses (confidence or lack thereof), and their interaction with the "four skills" of language learning (reading, listening, speaking, writing). I generally teach students within the HSK1-4 range, equivalent to Beginner-Intermediate level.
By modifying lessons, the student has the opportunity to learn according to their preferences, while maintaining an interest in the language and becoming aware of cultural differences. Learning a new language also involves learning a new mindset and way of understanding the world, especially for a pictographic language such as Mandarin, so I highly value including cultural awareness within the language lessons from an early stage.
As these lessons are made to tailor each student, I welcome constructive criticism. The best way for language teaching to be successful is through communication between teacher and student; this includes discussing and checking in on which aspects of the lessons the student enjoyed, and which they want modified or removed altogether.
Finally, language learning is an enjoyable process taking you on a cultural and eye-opening adventure, which I can assure you is worth all the hours of tedious grammar (which doesn't need to be tedious!) and character memorisation.
