My Approach as a Tutor
Teaching Methodology and Techniques
My teaching approach combines academic knowledge, practical business experience, technology, and real-world examples. With a PhD in Accounting and Finance and extensive university teaching experience, I understand that students learn differently, so I adapt my lessons to their individual needs, academic level, and learning goals.
I explain concepts in simple, clear steps, beginning with the basic principles before moving to more advanced applications. Rather than relying mainly on memorization, I encourage students to understand why an accounting or finance concept works and how it can be applied in real situations.
My teaching techniques include:
Step-by-step explanations of difficult concepts
Practical accounting and finance examples
Worked examples and guided exercises
Case studies based on real-world business situations
Interactive questions and discussions
Problem-solving exercises
QuickBooks demonstrations where appropriate
Financial statement analysis
Review questions and practice assignments
Feedback and correction to strengthen understanding
I also encourage students to ask questions freely. My goal is to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable saying, “I don't understand this yet,” and where we can work through the problem together.
A Typical Lesson
A typical lesson is structured around the student's specific learning objective.
1. Quick review — 5–10 minutes
We begin by reviewing the previous lesson or identifying what the student already knows.
2. Introduce the concept — 10–15 minutes
I explain the new topic using simple language, examples, diagrams, formulas, or accounting transactions where appropriate.
3. Demonstration — 10–15 minutes
I demonstrate how the concept works in practice. For example, when teaching financial statement analysis, we may work through an actual set of financial statements and calculate relevant ratios together.
4. Guided practice — 15–20 minutes
The student works through similar problems while I provide guidance and ask questions that encourage independent thinking.
5. Independent application — 10–15 minutes
The student attempts a problem independently so I can identify areas that need additional attention.
6. Summary and next steps — 5 minutes
We review the key lessons, clarify remaining questions, and identify what the student should practise before the next session.
The exact structure can be adjusted depending on the student's level, topic, and learning objectives.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
What sets me apart is my ability to connect academic theory with practical accounting, finance, and business applications.
I do not want students simply to memorize accounting rules or formulas. I want them to understand the reasoning behind them and know how to apply their knowledge.
My background combines:
PhD in Accounting and Finance
MBA in Finance
Bachelor's degree in Accounting
Higher National Diploma in Accounting
Extensive university-level teaching experience
Practical accounting experience
QuickBooks experience
Financial analysis and reporting
Excel and data-analysis skills
Experience in financial management and organizational leadership
This combination allows me to approach a topic from both the academic and practical perspectives.
For example, a student learning financial ratios should not only know the formula for the current ratio. I help the student understand what the ratio means, how to calculate it, how to interpret it, and what it may tell a business manager about the company's financial position.
My ultimate goal is to help students become confident problem-solvers rather than students who simply memorize answers.
