About Gerald
I'm Gerald, a Computational Design and Architecture expert based in Cape Town. I trained as an architect, and my work today sits across design, digital fabrication, BIM and environmental performance/building physics.
I have worked as the Computational Design Lead at a few global AEC firms operating across Africa, the USA and Europe. I run CoDe Atelier, a design consultancy I founded to bring parametric thinking and digital fabrication to firms across South Africa.
I hold a Master's in Advanced Computation for Architecture and Design from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC) in Barcelona, and a Master of Architecture from Eastern Mediterranean University in Cyprus. Closer to home, I completed the UCT Climate Systems Analysis Winter School and became a Green Star Accredited Professional through the Green Building Council of South Africa.
Teaching is something I chose deliberately. I've mentored students at IaaC Barcelona through their thesis and studio projects, taught Computational Design at the University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria, NUST (Namibia) and I have helped develop new architecture curricula for private universities in South Africa. I also founded the Computational Design South Africa community to connect practitioners who would otherwise be working in isolation. When I started out there was almost no local network for this kind of work, and I wanted to change that.
Good digital design comes from being clear about what you're trying to achieve and choosing the tool that gets you there with the least friction. Sometimes that tool is a parametric model, and sometimes it is a well-organised Revit file. That judgement is what I want to pass on.

My lessons are built around your project. It might be a studio project due in three weeks, a Revit model that keeps fighting back, a façade idea that works in a sketch but falls apart in 3D, or a practice that wants to know what AI can realistically do for them. That is where we start. My lessons follow your work and your pace, not a fixed course outline, and because I teach across the full range of digital architecture, you won't need a new tutor every time your project moves into a new stage.
Rhino/Revit and advanced modelling are usually the foundation. We begin with clean, accurate modelling habits: when to use which tool, how tolerances work, and the kind of file organisation that saves you hours later. From there we move into complex forms such as doubly curved surfaces, shells, twisted towers and freeform roofs. Just as important is the harder question of how to rationalise those forms into panels, ribs or components that someone can actually build; Design-to-Production mindset.
Computational design is a way of thinking before it is a set of tools. I teach you to set up a design as a system of relationships, so that changing one input updates everything downstream. Once that clicks, you stop redrawing and start testing options. If you want to go further, we add Python scripting, physics-based form finding, and workflows that pull data and use it to guide design.
Building performance is integrated from the conceptual stage. Using Ladybug Tools, Honeybee and EnergyPlus we run solar radiation, daylight, shading, thermal comfort and energy studies. I'll show you how to read the results and teach how performance can be a design driver.
Every session is hands-on. We screen share, model live and work through real problems together. I will push you, but patiently, towards your next level.
For beginners, I recommend half-hour session that builds a solid plan of work and defines critical milestones required on your project. Students working to a deadline can book sessions around specific deliverables. Professionals and firms can go straight to the workflow they need, and I'm happy to plan a short series of sessions around a live project.
