About Alex
Hello! My name is Alex Hwang, and I am a violin teacher with over 20 years of playing experience and more than 10 years of teaching experience working with both children and adults.
I began studying violin at the age of four under the guidance of a distinguished professor who had a profound influence on my musical development and teaching philosophy. Through years of dedicated study and performance, I developed a strong technical foundation and a deep appreciation for the educational value of music. In addition to my musical training, I hold a Master's degree in Education, which has helped me become a more effective and adaptable teacher for students of different ages, backgrounds, and learning styles.
Throughout my teaching career, I have worked with a wide variety of students, from preschool children taking their very first lessons to adults pursuing music as a lifelong passion. I have also helped students prepare for auditions, competitions, youth orchestras, and performance opportunities. I am especially proud that students I have taught have earned awards in international competitions, and one of my long-term students was accepted into the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra.
As a member of both the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the Suzuki Association of Georgia, I value continuous professional development and strive to provide high-quality instruction that balances strong technical training with musical expression and creativity.
I believe that learning music should be both challenging and enjoyable. My goal is to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students can build confidence, develop discipline, and discover the joy of making music. Whether a student dreams of performing on stage, joining an orchestra, or simply learning violin for personal enjoyment, I am committed to helping them achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

My approach to teaching violin is highly personalized, encouraging, and focused on building both strong technical foundations and a genuine love of music. I believe that every student learns differently, so I adapt my teaching methods to fit each student's age, learning style, goals, and experience level. My youngest student is 3 years old and she loves to have lessons with me. Whether a student is taking their very first lesson, preparing for orchestra auditions, or returning to the violin after many years, I create a structured learning plan that helps them progress with confidence.
I began studying violin at the age of four under the guidance of a distinguished professor whose influence helped me develop a strong technical foundation and a deep understanding of effective music education. With over 20 years of violin experience and more than 10 years of teaching experience, I have worked with students ranging from preschool children to adults. My students include complete beginners, hobby musicians, orchestra members, competition participants, and students preparing for auditions.
A typical lesson includes technical exercises, posture and tone development, repertoire study, ear training, and music theory integrated into the material being learned. Rather than teaching theory as a separate subject, I help students understand musical concepts through the pieces they are studying so that they can better appreciate the structure, expression, and beauty of music. For younger students, lessons incorporate age-appropriate activities and positive reinforcement to maintain engagement and build confidence. For older students, lessons focus on efficient practice strategies, musical interpretation, and long-term goal setting.
What sets me apart is my combination of extensive teaching experience, educational training, and individualized instruction. I hold a Master's degree in Education, which allows me to apply proven teaching strategies and adapt lessons to different learning styles. As a member of both the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the Suzuki Association of Georgia, I continually engage with professional development opportunities and educational resources that support student growth.
I am particularly passionate about helping young children build a strong foundation from the beginning. Over the years, I have taught students as young as three years old and guided others toward significant achievements, including acceptance into the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra and awards in international music competitions. At the same time, I enjoy working with adult learners who are pursuing music as a lifelong hobby and personal enrichment.
Lessons are available for children, teenagers, and adults of all skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced students preparing for auditions, youth orchestras, competitions, and other performance opportunities. My goal is not only to help students become better violinists, but also to develop confidence, discipline, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
